"My D" "My S"

What's with the constant referral of family by a letter? I've even heard "DS" used and wasn't sure if it meant "daughter and son." Is there any logical reason for this?

D means daughter, S means son, DS usually means "dear son" and DD means "dear daughter." You'll also see DH "dear husband" and rarely DW "dear wife," because of the preponderance of female posters among the parents here.

I agree with poster #2. No one wants to type out the entire words if they do not need to.

There is an abbreviation thread that gives most of them, but I can't remember where it is, sorry.
