2008 Volunteer News Editor Position Available for Junior CC Member

Want to help out the CC Community, do some interesting stuff, and pick up an EC that isn't likely to boost your resume much? CC is looking for a volunteer news editor, and you can apply!

Requirements: You should be a junior/rising senior in high school, and an existing CC member with a history of responsible posting. Sorry, brand new or recent members won't be considered at this time. English/writing skills should be excellent, and you should have an interest in the college admissions process (beyond just your own results!).

Duties: To review news stories from national, regional, and local news sources, and to post items of particular interest to the appropriate forum in CC. Also, to review threads started by CC members, and recommend particularly worthy threads for featuring within a forum or on the home page.

Time: For a regular CC member, we think this would add 10 - 20 minutes a day onto normal CC time. As with many things in life, the time and results will be what you make of it.

Benefits: You'll be helping your fellow CC members, you'll learn about the college process, and you'll gain an unusual extracurricular activity. We'll be happy to verify this if any college requests it, and we will write an honest letter of recommendation to recognize an excellent effort. And, if we have any CC gear like shirts or hats, we'll be sure to get you what we've got.

Duration: We hope this lasts until about this time next year, though obviously either CC or the individual can end the relationship at any time if desired.

Positions Available: One or two at this time. Depending on how things work out, we might expand this effort to include more news people, perhaps with some areas of specialization.

To apply: Please complete the application form at News Editor Application (Note - please check the requirements above before completing the app!)

If it wasn't for this I would do it. I'm on CC like all day anyways...

would colleges love the fact that an applicant's on CC so much? it strongly hints that the applicant is very interested in gaming the system, or at least, obsessed about it.

It said "should be a high school Junior or senior", I hope that isn't set in stone. I applied, but I included my complex situation.

What constitutes "new" or "recent"?

This sounds interesting and I wouldn't mind doing it at all. I'm a high school senior and I've applied.

Having a letter of recommendation from CC would do more harm than good. It would clearly show that the applicant is obsessed with college admissions and spends more time worrying than doing. It's fine to visit once in a while, but writing that you were an "Editor for CC" in your application is analogous to indulging in one of the activities featured on this list : Jay Mathews - Ten Stupid Ways to Ruin Your College Application - washingtonpost.com.

To have CC write a recommendation for you is a gimmick at best. Its as good as sending chocolate chip cookies to the admissions office, or worse, a foot in the door.

LOL, we won't send a recommendation if you don't request one... I'd hope that most people are here to learn more about individual colleges, figure out the intricacies of the financial aid system, and interact with others going through the same stressful process -- not "obsessing" or looking for ways to game the system.

I can't imagine colleges being impressed by an applicant who considers spending time on CC to be an EC. It's fine if someone is interested in being an Editor here, but it should definitely be kept out of one's application.

I think most people here have enough extracurriculars. In fact, the reason why most people want to do it is because they visit cc so often, that now they will actually do something productive, and not "procrastinate."
