How is the social life for the non-party/straight type guy? Very accepting of others choices, but set on his own as well: doesn't do alcohol/drugs, not into the party scene, pretty much enjoys coffee house/intramural sports/talking to friends type activities.

From my visits to Conn and discussing this with various people up there, I think it is safe to assume that your son should not have any problem whatsoever trying to have a social life if he does not drink. I'm pretty sure there are dorms that are substance free which maybe you should look into? If not, the other dorms will definitely accept him regardless of if he drinks/smoke. It should not be an issue for him finding others who don't drink or smoke. Regardless, every school has drinkers/smokers and non drinkers/non smokers and it will be up to him to find the correct balance as well as actively seeking out the other activities that interest him.

that actually sounds a lot like me! i love to have a good time, but i dont want to be drunk to do so. I got really excited when I saw this post, because I was a little worried about college partying and such too, but I think there will be plenty of other people we can hang out with :]

I'm a current student who is also a non-partier. Most of the parties are in south campus (Freeman is known as the "party dorm"). For the non-partier, your son might want to consider living in Blackstone or Burdick. Blackstone is the sub-free dorm and Burdick is the quiet dorm (both in central campus -- a great location). Blackstone is known for its strong community of residents, but it's also the oldest dorm on campus so it's kind of falling apart. The rooms are a nice size though. Also, the school has a new initiative to improve social life by planning events that are not centered around alcohol consumption. If anyone has any questions, feel free to message me.

Similar question - is the campus a bit of a suitcase school? Does everybody hang out together for weekend events, or do people have cars and go home or to NYC or Boston?

I certainly wouldn't call it a suitcase school. Most students only go home for breaks, and we usually only go to Boston or NYC if there's a free bus, which happens occasionally. In my experience, the campus seems to be just as full on the weekends as it is during the week.

I'm wondering if there is enough of a mix of students so that you don't see the same people every day, or that it doesn't get too clicky?
