Cooper Union housing

My D is a junior and is interested in engineering at Cooper Union. We do not live nearby and I am wondering about housing for students especially with the high cost of housing in New York City. How difficult is it to find an apartment and what would be an average monthly rental payment? I see on the website there is a dorm but it looks like it doesn't have enough rooms for everyone who goes to the school. Are most of the Cooper Union students from the local area and do they live with their parents? Thanks very much for any information.

She does not have to live in Manhattan. Queens, Brooklyn and Jersey City are all good choices. I live in Jersey City right now and the one bedroom apartment costs me $975 a month.

If I am accepted by Cooper Union (cross my fingers), the commute will be 30 minutes from door to door.

Thanks for the information. Good luck with your acceptance. Are you applying for this fall? When will you receive your decision?

The difficulty of finding an apartment really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how picky you are. For one apartment, the rent was $3500 split among 5 people. In my second apartment, it was $4000 split among 5. Neither included utilities.

Many students are from the New York-New Jersey area, though art and architecture students tend to be more geographically diverse (at least the ones I met). Even so, many still live on their own. Six of the eight roommates that I've had lived close enough to commute if they had to.

The dorm only has enough room for freshmen.

Thanks very much for the information. My D was also wondering about the general community feeling of the school. Do students hang around after classes and participate in clubs and activities on campus? My D is interested in engineering although liked the idea of interacting with art and architecture students. She is looking for a school that is both technical and artsy I think (although her criteria seems to change from day to day).

frostman: I hope you have heard by now whether you were accepted.

I haven't noticed a high amount of hanging out between the three schools, the artists have their studios and parties, the architects have their studio, and us engineers have our labs and lounge, which while technically for all, is usually used by just engineers. She does have the option of taking art classes, but the three schools tend to stay to themselves.
