Cornell Fraternity and Sorority Rankings and Descriptions 2011
Hey guys, I am making this because I know rush is coming up, and before I rushed, I took in a lot of outdated information from this website, so I would like to provide an update for those at least considering rush. Before you ask, I am a junior in a self-proclaimed "middle or lower tier" fraternity. I do not regret my decision at all because I have a fantastic group of friends and don't care too much about the quality of our mixers (I don't generally look for sorority girls, though I was originally rushed from a much higher fraternity). However, many people look for things like this, and that's what I hope to distinguish between them. I use a tier system out of necessity because there is really no other way to do it. Now, each fraternity is unique, but you will notice many trends as I go down the list like the higher ones tend to mix with higher sororities, and tend to be richer and douchier (though again, I know people in top fraternities who are neither, and people in lower fraternities that are both). If you have any questions, PM me. Finally, MEET THE BROTHERS BEFORE YOU DECIDE ON A HOUSE. NEVER CHOOSE A HOUSE BASED OFF OF REPUTATION.
Top Tier (think around 2 mixers a week):
Psi U: Known to be very wealthy around campus, but generally more on the pretty boy side of the spectrum. Have a nice house right near West Campus that has a squash court inside. Has closed events as opposed to open parties, and has a very good sorority relations. Small pledge class and usually a split in brotherhood between the fairly low amount of athletes and others. Generally snobby and not that down to earth, but fun.
Sig Phi: Also known to be wealthy, but in a less outlandish fashion. House is right next to Psi U and also has a squash court. They throw much more open events, and usually a much more diverse house. They use to have a small pledge class, but opened up recently. They mix well with top sororities, but there brotherhood is said to be not as strong as others and mostly characterized as all pretty boys. Generally nice people though.
SAE: Known to be a huge and very diverse brotherhood that has a very big brand name. This house is known to have a lot of Jewish brothers, but also is diverse in that they have a lot of meatheads and filler kids otherwise. They do well in intramurals, and generally mix well, though not as much in the past, with sororities. They are known to schedule their events around milking freshmen guys/girls. They have a nice house on West.
Sig Chi: Known to be more laid-back gentlemen with a very close brotherhood, but still has quite a few meatheads. There house is very far away from campus on north, but it is huge and has a pool. This house usually attracts a lot of the soccer team and they throw good open parties. Also known for its very time consuming and touch pledging process. Mix pretty well with top sororities.
Chi Psi: Known to be a very athletic house with a very large and close brotherhood and state-school mentality. Obviously a lot of meatheads, but they have a very nice house in probably the best location in relation to campus and other sororities. Have good open parties, but known to be hit or miss with the top sororities. Their pledging is probably the hardest on campus.
Alpha Delt: Known to be rich guys that aren't afraid to show their wealth. Nice, gothic house right near SAE/Fiji that usually gets a small brotherhood. Has strong relations with a couple top sororities and not that athletic. Known to be not down to earth, but I know some people in the house that are pretty nice and awesome. Feud with Fiji and fairly hard pledging.
Delta Upsilon (DU): Known to be a pretty good frat with decent parties. Location behind law school and okay house. Known to start fights and generally have a meathead personality in general. Decent reputation with sororities, known for their Clam Bake at the end of the year.
Delta Chi: Have a very nice house, but a little out of the way on north. Known to be extreme pretty boys and “friend-zone guys”, but have a good sorority relationship. Throw very average parties and have a lot of guys on the rowing team. Usually very nice guys.
Sig Pi: House got banned a couple years ago when they used to be a top house, but they have had pretty decent pledge classes, so they are coming back. Throw good parties and have pretty good sorority relations. Great location on West with notable house. Usually pretty boys and decent athletics.
ATO: Lacrosse and squash house that throws some good parties and good after-hours. Has a lot of the team and then fillers that don’t seem to mesh well. Have good sorority relations and a new house, but you can’t really tell by this point.
Chi Phi: Known to have a diverse house, but with a lot of sprint football and rugby guys, some of which are meat heads. Kind of far house on West. They have a decent sorority rep with middle ones and decent parties. Feuds with Lambda Chi.
TEP: Jewish house that generally rose a bit since Pike lost its house. House is in awful condition and not a great location, but they have a good sorority relationship, especially with the Jewish sororities. Known to drink/smoke a lot, and somewhat hard pledging. Generally nice guys.
Fiji: Very big physical house that throw just a lot of events in generally. Very diverse brotherhood, but known to be very segmented and not close. Has a lot of the sailing team. Fairly athletic and some meatheads and known to drink a ton and to flaunt their reputation. Good rep with middle tier sororities. Feud with Alpha Delt.
Sig Nu: Football frat and everything you would expect from one. House is very out of the way but is nice, and they throw more after hours than actual parties. House got in a trouble last year, but they are still doing fine. Decent sorority relations.
Phi Psi: The football linemen house. As you would expect, massive guys. Mix well with Pi Phi because of this. They have pretty big parties too and are just usually enjoyable people.
Sig Ep: Still somewhat new on campus after losing their house. They have a very dorm-like house and generally pick up a very random group of kids for their pledge class. No pledging or close to it, which results in a very low level of brotherhood within the house. Still have decent sorority relations and are very nice guys.
Lambda Chi: Not the greatest physical house on West that is known to throw a lot of open events. Has a diverse group of guys, but a lot of Jewish ones too. Known to be a bit snobby, but still have a decent middle-lower tier relationship. Throw pretty good parties. Feud with Chi Phi.
Sammy: Dorm-like house right next to the dorms on north. A bit on the nerdy side Jewish fraternity that has surprisingly low attendance considering its location on north. Decent sorority locations with the Jewish sororities. Parties are not the best, but still decent. Fairly involved on campus.
Llenroc: Cool house (Ezra’s), albeit extremely far away from campus and north that attracts an interesting mix of guys. Surprisingly rough pledging for this level. The guys are generally fairly nerdy and not too fratty, but they are nice. A bit lower sorority reputation, but very tight with the bottom ones. Okay parties. Generally involved on campus.
Rockledge: Interesting house that looks over the edge of the gorge on West. Attracts a diverse class that usually has a couple crew guys and they are usually involved in leadership on campus. Usually has a decent amount of engineers, so some are a bit nerdy. Parties are usually fun and generally mix with lower-middle sororities.
Pi Kapp: Nice house on north notable for their lack of hazing during pledging. House is really low-key but still has some okay parties. Have mediocre relations with sororities and generally does well academically.
Phi Tau: Fairly low-key house on north kind of overshadowed by Delta Chi. Has a mix of preppy and a bit on the nerdy side kids. Parties are usually pretty small but fun. Decent relations with middle-lower sororities.
DKE: Cool looking house next to DU on West. Generally has a pretty small brotherhood that likes to have fun, but sometimes are a bit sketch. Decent sorority relations at their level and throw a lot of events, especially early in the year.
Zeta Psi: Big house right on north with a diverse class. Somewhat nerdy guys but they have fun and don’t really care what people think of them. Usually nice and have decent parties.
AGR: Ag frat far up on North. There are a ton of farmer guys in this frat that have a good time, and have events that are exactly what you would imagine (bull-riding). Have some mixers and usually pretty good parties.
Phi Sig: Nice white house on West that usually gets somewhat athletic guys. Basement is really bad for parties, but otherwise the brothers are cool, except for some sketch ones. Mix fairly well with lower-mid sororities.
Thumpty: Called Theta Drug, these guys are really nice, but they just do many...illegal things. Their house looks really nice, but their parties aren’t usually that populated and they do not mix that much.
ZBT: Pretty big house far down on North. Made up of a lot of Jewish guys, these guys are pretty nice, but kind of sketchy. They hold a couple really big parties during the year, but don’t mix too much.
DTD: Supposedly on the rise, has a very small class that used to be known for renting out their house to others. House looks like a dorm, and they have a couple decent parties every now and then. Don’t really mix.
AEPi: Nerdy jewish frat on North. Weird looking house, but the guys are really nice and they try hard when they throw parties. High gpa. Occasional mixer with Jewish sorority.
KDR: Frat with mostly engineers. The brothers are extremely nice, but pretty nerdy. House far on North and usually have thursday night events.
ACACIA: House on north that has a lot of nerdy brothers, but they are nice and have fun. Usually populate their parties through facebook or other similar things.
Phi Dry: Dry fraternity on campus, but they still blatantly drink, just in secret. Fun and usually fairly athletic guys, but obviously limited.
TKE: Extremely diverse house on North that gets a lot of foreign kids. Has a lot of kids you would think would choose other houses, but TKE suffers from the reputation.
Beta: Really nice house on North that used to be quite high on campus, but now is extremely small and has predominantly gay brothers.
Seal and Serpant: Barely gets any pledges, known to be possibly gay or just extremely nerdy brothers. Bob Saget show.
Now, because of all the cattiness of the sororities and everyone’s preferences, it’s impossible to have a clear-cut ranking for them, so I will basically put them into groups and give a minor description.
DG: Very good looking, a bit snobby.
Theta: Very good looking, closer sisterhood.
Alpha Phi: Very cute, housewife type of girls.
Kappa: Pretty good looking, party hard.
SDT: Jewish, cuter girls.
Tridelt: Fairly good looking, known to be promiscuous though that’s hard to say.
Pi Phi: Cute girls that are involved in sports.
AEPhi: Jewish, though plenty of non-Jewish and a mix of very pretty and not so much.
AChiO: Has a lot of Jewish sisters, and usually party a good amount.
AZD: Friendly girls who like to party hard.
KD: Nice girls, don’t rage as much but still fairly hard.
