Well this sucks.

I am currently a freshman in high school. I did horribly first semester.
Here is my schedule:
The first two classes that you will read are simply laughable. Don't even ask how it happened, incredibly intricate story.

Biology H: D+
Algebra 1: D-
Spanish I- B+
Lit H: C-
Religion: A+
History H: C-

Now that is disgusting, considering I was planning on attending schools like Notre Dame, Cornell, and Navy. Now I realized what was happening and did OK (All A's and B's) the first half of the 2nd semester, and I fully believe that I will get all A's this quarter. So, what I came here to ask is whether this is really going to hurt me when applying to schools. Assuming that I do very well on the SATs, get all A's for the next three years, and participate in three varsity sports (maybe become recruited). I also am in three of the most important clubs at my school.

My top 5 schools are:

Notre Dame
Duke
Cornell
Navy/Army
UCal Berk

Don't worry too much about it. One bad semester shouldn't hurt you as long as you continue to do well for the rest of HS.

If you get recruited then it doesn't matter. Otherwise it is going to hurt unless you perform extremely outstandingly in every other aspect.

Yes, it hurts you. But with a strong turn-a-round, it shouldn't hurt you much.

Colleges like to see an upward trend-- so I wouldn't worry too much as long as you don't get those grades again! Plus some colleges don't even look at freshman grades

"assuming" that you will go from having "D"'s & "C"'s in 4 out of 6 classes to all "A'"s for 2 &1/2 straight years...& become a recruited DI athlete may be unrealistic. Concentrate on the present & the future will take care of itself...even if it isn't what you now envision.

As true as that is, I did go from doing that poorly to have all A's and B's in a semester.....and I have all A's this quarter....I have been playing lacrosse my whole life and I've done a lot of research about recruiting and it's pretty possible, if I work my butt off, that I could go to Cornell or Notre Dame to play lacrosse. On a side note, I said "assuming" for a reason. It was to set a scenario. The question wasn't whether or not my track record will represent how I do the rest of my years, but to see if it was actually possible for me to recover.

If you grades remain solid and you can get recruited for lacrosse, I'd like your chances. I assume you are extremely awesome at lacrosse if you think you are capable of being recruited by Division I athletics; very nice!

Haha thanks a lot Mikey! Yeah I think the thing that separates me from other lacrosse players is that I weight train (which hardly any of them do, surprisingly) I actually enjoy hitting, I'm not afraid to get hit, and I work hard in the off season. I heard that if you show a lot of intrest in one single school you have better chances of being recruited.

What happens for those classes in terms of your HS graduation? Do you need to retake the classes for credit?

I get to retake the Ds in summer school. They remain on my record, but my new grade goes to the gpa.

Yo. kiddo. Don't worry. You still got time to fix them. you can fix them in summer school. plus, freshmen year doesn't hurt you AS much, but that does not give you an excuse to do bad ion your freshmen year. Chill and just get a tutor.
