Language Placement Test

If my ethnicity is Japanese, but I do not know or speak Japanese at all, do I have to take a placement test?

Do you speak any other language? I took a Spanish placement test even though I don't speak a word of Spanish, it was just my school's policy. It's just to know what class to put you in if you do take the major (at least one language class is required at some schools).

I speak only English...I took Spanish in HS, but I won't be continuing that in college because I don't remember anything.

here is your info:
Language Placement and Testing - Department of Asian Studies

Quote:
A Placement test IS NOT needed for:

Students with no background in the language at all. You may enroll directly in the elementary level (Some exceptions may apply. Please check individual courses for more information).
if you look at the info about Japanese it doesn't look like it has any exceptions.
The Japanese Language at Cornell - Department of Asian Studies

so I guess it does not matter what your ethnicity is, since of course linguistic knowledge it not genetically inherited.

thanks

I was just worried that the professor would view me unfavorably because my ethnicity would make it seem like I would know the language
