Cornell Fraternity and Sorority Rankings 2012/2013

I’m going to be a senior in A&S this semester and I figured that it’s about time someone does an accurate fraternity and sorority rankings list especially for the incoming frshmen. Also, there is a lot of misinformation out there so I tried to make this list as accurate as possible. I am in a fraternity although it is probably best to not specify which one. Most importantly, it is not about whether or not you’re in the top house, it’s about whether or not you’re in the right house for you.

Fraternity Rankings-

Top Tier
Chi Psi: A wealthy house on West with a “state school vibe”, meaning that they are very “fraty” and party hard. They have a very nice house. Very cool, good looking, athletic brothers and mix well with the top sororities. Very good 2012 pledge class.

Sig Phi: A nice looking, wealthy house located next to Psi U. Fairly small brotherhood but they mix with all of the top sororities. Very good 2012 pledge class. Known as “pretty boys”

Psi U: Very wealthy house with many WASPy brothers. They have a nice house on West that contains a squash court. The brothers are cool but most are very snobby and elitist, with a low number of athletes. They mix well with the top sororities. Their 2012 pledge class is sub par but they still have a solid reputation on campus. Not known to host open parties, preferring mixers and closed events.

Sig Chi: Great house with a pool but it is located in the middle of nowhere on North Campus. Cool brotherhood with a lot of soccer players. Mix well with all of the top sororities and had an okay 2012 pledge class.

Upper Tier
Sig Pi: Nice house on West in a great location with a large balcony reffered to as “ the beach”. They were kicked off a few years back when they were a top house, but are regaining that reputation. Cool brotherhood, with a lot of brothers having reputations as pretty boys or stoners. Mix mostly with top sororities and had a good 2012 pledge class.

Delta Chi:A fairly nice, large house but it is located on North. Some Waspy brothers and a lot that would be considered “pretty boys”. For the most part they are classy and pretty chill. Some would say they try too hard to be a top house. They had a very good 2012 pledge class, and mix fairly well with upper tier sororities.

Ato: An okay house on West with a pretty disgusting basement/dance floor, even for a frat house. Known as the lacrosse house. The few brothers that aren’t on the lacrosse team don’t mesh as well, but still a good overall brotherhood. They throw good afterhours and had a pretty good 2012 pledge class.

Alpha Delt: Nice-looking house on West that resembles a castle. They used to be a top house but are declining in reputation due to being on social probation for so long. They are supposed to finally be off SoPro this year so they have a chance to improve. Brothers are known to be wealthy and a bit snobby. Some of the newer brothers are not as wealthy/cool due to their declining reputation, but still a WASPy brotherhood. Mix with middle and upper tier sororities when they are actually allowed to have mixers. Some of the hardest pledging on campus.

Du: A castle-like house on West full of meathead, duchey brothers. They have a “state school vibe” and throw fun parties. Their 2012 pledge class was okay, and they have good relations with middle-tier sororities.

Chi Phi: A nice house on West, right on the border of College Town. They throw decent parties, but thir house is being renovated this coming semester so they may only be able to throw parties at their annex. Pretty good, athletic brotherhood consisting of sprint football and rugby players. Mix mostly with middle tier sororities.

Tep: They are a Jewish fraternity located on North. Not only is their house in a bad location, it is also in bad condition. They have solid sorority relations, especially with Jewish sororities such as SDT. They had a good 2012 pledge class and seem to be rising.

Middle Tier
Phi Psi: A newer house on West that resembles a dorm. A lot of brothers are swimmers and a fair amount are Jewish. Fairly cool brotherhood overall. Decent relations with middle-tier sororities. Their 2012 pledge class was alright. Known for Phi Psi 500, a big party they throw before slope day.

Phi Sig: A rising house on West in a good location that resembles the White House. Their brothers are pretty cool, but some are nerdy. They mix with middle and lower tier sororities. They throw a lot of fun open parties, and have a good dance floor set up.

Lambda Chi: An okay house on West next to Chi Phi. They have a pretty cool brotherhood and are known for having a lot of gay brothers. They mix fairly well with middle-tier and lower-tier sororities. Known for their Foam Party they throw every year. They don’t really haze brothers. Also, they have a fued with Chi Phi.

Fiji:A very large house on West. For this reason, they have a large, diverse, brotherhood, which means they are not very close. A lot of brothers depledge. They have been on the decline, but had a really good 2012 pledge class. Decent, middle-tier sorority relations. Known for Fiji Island, a big outdoor party they throw every year.

Sig Nu: An okay, low-key house on West that overlooks a gorge. The brotherhood consists mostly of football players, so the brothers are usually pretty athletic and cool. Decent sorority relations, but not many open parties.

Llenroc: Beautiful house (Once lived in by Ezra Cornell himself), kind of the way on West. A lot of nerdy brothers, but all are nice guys. They have decent sorority relations with lower-tier sororities. They throw some good open parties but their dance floor is kind of cramped. Goos 2012 pledge class.

Sig Ep: Decent location on West, but their house resembles a dorm. Their brotherhood is pretty cool but they have some weird brothers. Their 2012 pledge class wasn’t that great, but they did get some cool brothers. Decent middle-tier sorority relations. They don’t haze pledges, instead put them through a “member development” process. Known for “Getlemen’s Mondays” every Monday night where they throw a party and everyone has to wear a tie.

Lower Tier
Sammy: A Jewish house in a bad location on North next to the freshman dorms. Their brotherhood is fairly nerdy, but they have some cool brothers. They have okay sorority relations, especially with the Jewish ones. Their parties are pretty fun, and they had a good 2012 pledge class.

Agr: An ag frat on North campus with some cool brothers. They can often be seen riding to class on the back of a pick-up truck. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty good, and they have decent sorority relations. They don’t really throw any open parties. They are said to be on the rise because they had philanthropy events with top sororities, but they still only cater to a specific type of person (i.e. Ag student).

Phi Tau: A low-key house on North campus. Many nerdy guys and decent sorority relations with middle and lower-tier sororities. A lot of Asian brothers.

Pi Kapp: Another low-key house on North. Their house is pretty clean, mainly because they don’t party very much. Many nerdy brothers, and mediocre sorority relations. They had a good 2012 pledge class.

Dke: A beautiful, castle-like house on west. The brothers themselves aren’t the coolest or the most fun, but they have a few good open parties. Their 2012 pledge class was okay, and have decent sorority relations.

Zeta Psi: A large frat house on North across from Risley, with the biggest TV out of all the frat houses. The brothers are fairly nerdy but they do like to party. Poor sorority relations.

Zbt: A house with a spectacular view on North. They are nationally known as a Jewish fraternity. Most of the brothers are stoners, and they don’t have very good sorority relations.

Aepi: An odd-looking house on North Campus. The brothers are fairly Jewish and fairly nerdy. Not known for partying, and don’t have the best sorority relations.

ACACIA: Their house is way out of the way on North Camous. The brothers are nice and fun but fairly nerdy. They throw a decent amount of fun, open parties.

Thumpty: A large, nice-looking house in a good location on West. Known in the past for their drug use and for being really sketchy around girls, but their reputation is improving a bit, especially since they had a pretty good 2012 pledge class. They have a lot of raves, and often have local bands playing at parties instead of a DJ. They don’t have many mixers.

Phi Dry: An out-of-the-way house on North. They are a dry house, but do sometimes drink. The brothers are pretty nerdy, but some are cool. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty good.

Beta: A nice-looking house on North. They are a dry house, so they have very little social activity. Most of the brothers are nerdy, but their pledge classes are getting bigger.

Rockledge: Another nice-looking house that overlooks a gorge on West Campus. A diverse group of brothers, with most being on the nerdier side. They don’t mix very often but throw a few good open parties.

Kdr: An out-of-the-way house on North. Most of the brothers are engineers. They don’t have very good sorority relations, but have a few open parties.

Dtd: A small house on West with very small pledge classes. They don’t mix much at all.

Seal And Serpent: A fraternity that only exists at Cornell. Bob Saget partied there for part of his documentary. The brothers are fairly nerdy and they have very small pledge classes.

Sorority Rankings- Sororities are a bit more difficult than fraternities to classify because there are so few sororities compared to the amount of girls that rush. This means that even though each house has the reputation listed below, there are still a diverse group of girls in each house and some girls that just don’t fit in.

Top Tier-

DG: Mostly good-looking, snobby girls. The unattractive girls are that much more wealthy. Good 2012 pledge class.

Theta: Good-looking girls. Still very snobby but a bit more athletic than DG. Good 2012 pledge class.

Alpha Phi: A diverse group of girls that are still mostly good-looking. They used to have a “nice girl” reputation, and still have a lot of those girls, but also have more crazy, “party girl” types. Their 2012 pledge class was okay and seemed to have more promiscuous, party girls.

Kappa: A mix of good-looking and not so good looking girls. A lot of wealthy girls who like to party hard. Rumored to do a lot of coke. Their 2012 pledge class is less attractive than previous years.

Upper Tier-

Pi Phi: Cute, fun girls that party a lot. They had a good 2012 pledge class.

SDT: Cute girls, some are fairly wealthy. They are mostly all Jewish. Known to sometimes try too hard to improve their reputation. Good 2012 pledge class.

Tri Delt: Nice, cute girls. There is a mix of very sporty girls and nicer, nerdier girls. Their 2012 pledge class was okay.

Middle Tier-

AePhi: A lot of Jewish girls though more diverse than SDT. Mostly cute girls. Good 2012 pledge class.

KD: Nice girls who are said to be on the rise. They aren’t known to party hard. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty good. Their house is across from Sammy.

AChiO: A lot of Jewish sisters. They are all very nice and like to party. Their house is kind of out of the way on North.

Lower Tier-

Phi Sigma Sigma: The newest sorority on campus. For this reason, their newest pledge class is fairly large and fairly diverse. They party hard. This will be the first year that they have a house and sisters can live in. They are said to be on the rise.

AZD: Nice, friendly girls. They have a nice-looking house on North, fairly out of the way.

When I was a freshman, I thought these rankings were really important. And then as a sophomore, I paid even more attention as a brother. As an incoming junior, I
finally get why so many people call these rankings stupid.
Your fraternity/sorority can't hold you back socially. You shouldnt also have to rely on gour fraternity ranking to justify your "coolness." In fact, that's pretty pathetic. I know cool people in "lower fraternities" and I know losers in "top sororities."
As for female relations, most houses mix with enough sororities that you'll have some opportunities regardless. What you should be looking when distinguishing fraternities are behaviors and atitudes. Some houses have bigger parties, some have less/more open parties, some are into more drug use, some have higher g.p.a.'s, etc. find a good fit for yourself.
I can admit right now that I passed up a bid from a "higher ranked" frat because I thought they smoked too much and I wasn't into that so much. I joined a house where some people smoke, but it's not a dominating atitude of the entire house.
Find your fit and don't rely on superficial "senior girls" to tell you what's cool because I can gauarentee that anyone who thinks they know every fraternity inside and out is full of ****. There are too many fraternities and too many people to really get a good grasp. Heck, the fraternity I joined was considered lower ranked when I joined and all my freshman friends were like, "what are you doing?!" they joined a higher ranked house and are miserable. Now I'll be living happily with my new brothers in an annex and they're living with other friends outside the fraternity in a small apartment because they just dont want to be around their fraternity anymore.
Rant over. Stop listening to these stupid rankings. And stop making them!

^ great post! This isn't high school - by college all kids should have a sense of who they are and look for the group that matches them best. The rankings are floated around for incoming students, but end up not being that important once they're on campus. Just find the group that matches you as a person - this is really important since you'll probably be living in the house at least one year. My S found the perfect group for him and it's not in the top tier. Those groups just seemed too stressful and too demanding (in an unproductive way) and he's an engineer. After freshman year, the only thing that matters is if you have friends you like and are comfortable with.
