Rushing and Pledging: Please Explain

Can someone please explain in depth the rushing process and the pledging process for frats here at Cornell? What goes on each day? What are the chances of getting a bid? Just how everything works. I'm looking forward to rush week in January and I want to know as much as I can about it. Thanks.

ok newname I'll take a shot...it's been awhile, but I think the format is still the same...during the fall there is "informal rush"...some people receive bids (offers to join) but many do not...all interested freshman return to campus a week early before 2nd semester (end of January) for formal rush...there are "smokers" every day...these are basically open houses where freshman tour the different houses and meet the brothers...at the end of the week, more bids are given out...sometimes a freshman will recieve bids from several houses and they have to choose...many people decide they like a particular house and stop going to others and just focus on that one house.

Because there are some many houses (roughly 45) and they are so spread out its a good idea to get some sense of what houses you might be intested in before formal rush, because you'll have a hard time seeing more than a few on any given day...

All the houses have personalities of a sort... ask around and people will give you the scoop...there are enough Frats that there is basically a set up for all personalilty types, so with a little due dilligence you ought to find a good fit...

hope that helps

(sorority rush is a whole different story BTW)

two questions:

1) how many days does formal rush last? how many days will i have to visit each house? and are there set times during the day to visit the various houses?

2) how will the brothers remember me specifically after meeting probably hundreds of other students? and if everyone is drunk how is there any chance they'll remember me?

thanks wharf rat.

look here for chapter info:

Smokers are during the day and are dry...

you won't be able to see all the houses, so use some time this fall to investigate...use the web...ask some friends...go visit some houses...you'll need to narrow it down to no more than 10 to make it manageable...there will be houses that will be actively interested in recruiting you...they all need new members...they'll remember you
