BIOBM 3300 Auto-tutorial Biochem

How is BIOBM 3300? Specifically?
What is the format of the class? How many hours a week average must a person put into it? etc.
How does it compare/contrast to PHYS 101 (Autotutorial Physics)?

I haven't taken BIOBM 330, but I am guessing there is no class since it's autotutorial. I've taken PHYS 101, which has no class. If you're a self learner and find that lecture doesn't help you, and your shcedule doesn't allow you to have a lot of class time, take autotutorial.

it's not that bad if you stay on time.

i faced this dilemma last semester. i took the lecture courses and don't regret it. i knew a few people in the auto class and they were consumed by it. no one really enjoyed it or even liked it that i knew. everyone in it was reading the text every time i saw them. they are quite happy now though that they are done and can laugh at me for being stuck in bik tye's aweful excuse for a biochem course.

the benefits of the lectures: feigenson. brilliant man and an awesome professor who will get you to actually work hard at proteins & metabolism just from his sheer passion and willingness to help students- it's not easy, but you genuinely feel as though you want to put in the effort just for him. if you go to his periodic 'info' sessions, he will even write you a great letter of rec. sorry, it sounds like you're pretty set on 3300 but if there is any convincing to be done it is in the name of feigenson. the second semester is boring as hell though- with an awful professor in bik tye. good news is that it's a lot easier than 1st semester, workload-wise. good luck.

Also agree with you on this one.

If you have time, I highly recommend the lectures over 3300. My friends who took 3300 were consumed by the class and I hardly saw them that semester

I took BioBM3300 first semester junior year (I am now a senior).

In the end I liked it. It does take up a huge amount of time- you need to read about a chapter a week from my memory. It doesn't SOUND like a lot but you need to know alll the details, and if you take a break for a week and fall behind it is difficult to catch up.

About once every 7-10 days you need to go to Stimson and take a chapter quiz which generally are not too-bad. And you are allowed like 2 fails?

If you can answer all the qs on the packet and quizzes, you will do well on the tests. Its very straightforward- if you don't understand something just ask a TA.

And you are done in 1 semester!! I think it was worth it. I probably would not take it concurrently with genetics.

i'm wondering about that too since i'll be taking 3300 next semester. currently taking 102 phys and its a lot of work haha.. in terms of getting the concepts down.. i think biochem should be easier since its bio...

I really enjoyed the 331 lectures. Quizzes every week really keep you on top of the material, but I didn't feel overwhelmed by them. My friends who took the autotutorial were consumed by the class and I really didn't think it was worth it. 331 was one of my favorite classes. Bik Tye's lecture was super boring, but for some reason biochem came naturally to me, so I rarely went to lecture or just read the paper during lecture and got an A without much effort, just a long cramming session 2 days before the exams. I do not regret taking the lectures. My friend fell behind in the autotutorial and got an F!

PS I also enrolled in 334, the computer graphics in molecular bio 1 credit class and thought it was easy/fun as well.
