Nope - it's random. I know this because I asked someone at CIT.
They told me to go to the Cornell directory and start searching by playing with the numbers. You'll find a lot of "search returned 0 results" coming up.
There is a way for undergraduates to get the tenured professor alias thing.
Either way, there's the C-mail dealie they're doing now. I think that'll replace their squirrelmail/kerberos nonsense.

Reason: BUT - the alias thing is advertised as for profs only.....it's not completely true,I've seen undergrads with it.

Yeah, it's sort of weird.
Then again, Cornell has a MASSIVE number of people to assign university emails to...it's alright.
I'll probably only have my webmail address for another few months...(after only 2 years....*sob*), but I'm gonna do the C-mail switch anyway, just to see.
Ohhh, sorry, I misunderstood. I've already set up my C-mail account, and being a Gmail user already, I love how everything is organized. I guess I thought that Cornell was working on some sort of new program that would allow students to choose the yourname.surname@cornell.edu address.

That's called Cornell's optional Email Alias.
The website says it's only for people with 'academic appointment' but this one girl I know has a bf in CIT....and she has an alias email as an undergrad.
If you google :Cornell webmail alias, you'll get on their site....notice there's a space for "requests" I think that's how they do it for undergrads. You'd need an 'in' though.
Otherwise it's just regular C-mail!
Which is pretty nice.
