Parents weekend is totally optional. We live about 3 hours away, so it's an easy drive. We went Freshman year & it was a great chance to meet my son's friends and their parents. The majority of parents DON'T go, so if your parents can't make it, that's fine. We took some of my son's friends (whose parents didn't come) to dinner - hopefully your friends' parents will do the same for you. As to what events take place, that really wasn't of interest to us.
As to when to show up, we got there for dinner Friday night, and left Sunday morning. Parents, remember, that most of that time you won't be with your kids. We gave our son plenty of space to go out Fri after dinner & sleep late on Saturday. We even got to go to a Cornell hockey game - it was so much fun.
As for orientation, yes we also went. Most kids have their parents there at some point, and everyone seems ok with that. I didn't see parents standing around crying and hanging on their kids. It just wasn't like that. Orientation is incredibly well run & organized and they have student volunteers who take the things out of your car, and bring them up to the room. It was great!!
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.
