I am not even a Cornell student! I was accepted to Cornell last year and today I received a letter in mail informing me that I am a victim of this security breach. I am really disappointed that Cornell, as a premier university in the world, would allow such negligent acts to occur. This security breach was totally avoidable since our personal information should have never been stored on a laptop computer without encryption and that laptop should not be present at such an unsecured environment. I have lost my faith in Cornell and I will unlikely apply to Cornell for my graduate education.

lmao you let this sway your decision to apply to Cornell for grad school?

this made you "lose your faith in Cornell"?

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
I'm glad you found a scapegoat.

I put a temporary fraud alert on my account. I also signed up for that credit monitoring service that Cornell set up through Kroll, but I'm still not sure what the heck it actually does. I can't even access a credit report through them.

Other than that, I plan to check my credit at least once a year. Maybe I will check more frequently, but that would involve paying for a report. (Does anyone know if it's possible to stagger credit reports? For example, order your free annual credit report from Experian, four months later order from Trans Union, then order from Equifax.) I really hate having to worry about this in the back of my mind.
