How to Beat the Internet Rush for Course Enrollment

Eager students will wake up early and start registering for their courses right when the clock turns 7:00.

As a result, the student center is very slow due to all the requests it receives.

But is this lag a result of a bandwidth crunch stemming from the fact that every student in the dorm is trying to access the internet? Or is it a result of the overload of the student center server?

I noticed significant slowdowns from my dorm room when accessing student center, but other sites such as Facebook and YouTube loaded just as quickly as before - seeming to suggest that bandwidth in the dorms are adequate, but not at the server's end.

However, a friend of mine who accessed the student center from her private connection at Collegetown said that there was no lag whatsoever and that the server responded just as quickly as during non-busy seasons.

So, what is the actual cause for the slowdown?

My son called us last night and said that he anticipated that Red Rover would be painfully slow for registration and asked if I would mind helping him register since there were specific classes and sections/labs he needed to have to make his schedule work. He's had problems with RR being slow before. He called right before 7am and talked me through the process. (I'm in Seattle...it wasn't 7 here). We had no problem with lagging and he got all his desired classes.

Ironically, the one main class he worked his schedule around dropped him in the middle of the day and rescheduled the class for 4 hours earlier, which means he can't take it now. (Engri1130). He ended up having to sign up for something else.

It was kind of strange...

I used RR to sign up right at 7am and had no lag at all.

When my dad was here, he tested the bandwidth on RR and said he was absolutely astonished at how much bandwidth Cornell was providing for a wireless connection. Far better than what we get even on cable at home.

There was only a little bit of lag when I pre-enrolled at 7am in Balch. I was actually really surprised at how quickly I was able to get my classes...I thought for sure the server would crash or something.

I had no issues. Only once did it take like 15 seconds to load a page, and that was while I was finalizing enrollment in gen chem, which is understandable.

I think the system worked great.
