Another thing that I was thinking about . . . . . . . . Are the dorms very noisy? I love studying from my bed or at my computer, and I was just wondering if I would be able to study from my dorm room at Cornell. I would hate to have to go to the library every time I needed to do some work. If anybody is currently attending Cornell, or knows anything about this, please let me know! Thanks so much!

Balch: the #1 place for guys
Dickson: Drug addicts and cool ppl
Donlon: Similar to Dickson, further from central campus
Court: no comments
Townhouse: Beer parties, almost no restriction, good for party, but furtheest from central campus
Low/High rises: Confusing house structure, but u will get use to it
Jameson: very close to RPCC

hey aznxjesus, do u know anything about the new cook dorms? do they have suites? Im transferring in the spring and i really want to live in a suite? where's my best bet to get one? thanks.

I heard Balch is pretty quiet-it's all girls. I also heard the low and high rises were relatively quiet, as were the twonhouses, since they're not traditional drom style.

I lived in Mews last year (one of the newer dorms, along with Court Hall) and it was VERY nice, but not quiet. It appears that although the design of the droms was pretty good, they cheaped a little on the construction and thus the walls were kinda thin. So, you may hear some stuff, but there are quiet lounges to study in that are nice.


All the frosh dorms are cool, they're all different so it depends on your preferences.

What is the look of the dorms, are they old style looking, like brick walls, not exactly run down, but antique looking, or are they more like a new age type of dorm, where everything is brand new and clean? Could you describe how they look?

each is different, I'll try to describe the frosh dorms as best as I can, they are all really nice:

Balch-collegiate gothic, old style but nice, with huge rooms-all girls
Dickson-massive colonial/georgian style dorm-recently recarpeted
High/low rises-post modern funky buildings-suite style with 2 doubles, 2
singles, and a bathroom on small corridors
Mews/Court-new, designed to blend with Dickson and Balch and do so quite
nicely-rooms are in "pod" style-the hallway has alcoves, each
with two doubles, a single, and a bathroom for those rooms
Donlon-giant thong, a bit mazelike but like a normal dorm, recently remodeled
on the inside
Townhouses-small houses with two double rooms, a bathroom, living room,
kitchen, and dining room-basically a college house but
on-campus and maintained

The dorms on north campus are pretty much all new and are really nice. From the outside they are all similar and keep up with the stone/semi-gothic/colonial dorm atmosphere, but are nice and modern inside. Most people do not study in their dorm rooms because of the noise and distraction, and there are libraries near-by with comfortable couches and stuff to lie down in.

Donlon was a *****hole until they remodeled it for last year's students. And it did live up to its billing as the "social dorm."

I still think Townhouse is the best, although it is a bit far from main campus

i heard that all of hte cornell dorms do not have cable in them. is this true or is it in just some freshmen buildings?

None of the dorms have cable in the rooms, except for the newer buildings (ie Court and Mews), but you have to pay for it separately. Every dorm DOES have a TV lounge on every floor (sometimes more than one) with cable TV. Most dorms have at least one big screen TV also.

Donlon and Dickson are really loud I've heard. I know people in the townhouses that tried to have parties, got caught and are now taking alcohol classes... i know people that study in their dorms in the low rises and in court, it depends on what your hall is like. i'm in balch and u can usually study here, not always though. the balch ra's are really strict, we also had a small party involving taking the hinges off a closet door and using it as a beer pong table in one of the really big triples... everyone got writen up... But it really depends on what your hall happens to be like that semseter... and what time you are trying to study... you dont get to pick your dorms though
