Anyone Need Info On Creighton?

I hang over on the ND board most of the time but I thought I would come post this in case someone ever needs information on Creighton. I attended Creighton for a year before transferring to Notre Dame (my dream school). I had a good experience at Creighton but also have a unique perspective because I know what it is like at another school so I compare ND and CU quite often. Anyways, if you ever need anything or have questions, feel free to get in touch with me. I am always happy to help! I was also a member of the Freshman Leadership Program if you have any questions on that and I also know a few tricks on how to get yourself more scholarship money!

Describe the neighborhoods in the immediate Creighton area. Is Biology/pre-med environment competive [cut throat]? Also, the Creighton web site seems to extoll diversity in the undergraduate student body. Are there really a lot of Hawaiians at Creighton?. LOL You'd think so from viewing the web site.

1. Creighton honestly isn't in the greatest neighborhood, but I never felt unsafe on campus. As long as you don't go north late at night you should be fine.
2. Pre-med is very difficult, and many don't make it through (though you can if you want to, many just find that they don't really want pre-med). However, if you do make it through, it is one of the best pre-med educations out there (and I am comparing it directly against schools like Notre Dame, where I now attend)
3. Creighton really is striving for more diversity, but it also has a ways to go. Being a Catholic school in Omaha doesn't help too much, but they are making efforts. However, it is true that there are a ton of people there from Hawaii....I am not sure why.

Do you happen to be from Colorado? I ask because I am and am a Regis grad. Anyways, what I have found and had friends successfully do is after successfully completing your freshman year you go to the Office of Student Retention (I think that is what it is called) and tell them that you are strongly thinking of transferring due to financial reasons. Be very specific and cite a comparable or state school which is much cheaper. The Office of Student Retention's job is keeping you at Creighton and they act as an advocate with financial aid (which if you have talked with those people you know why that is necessary). My friends who did this got a couple grand extra in scholarships for the next year to keep them at Creighton, so it is an option that you can exercize as long as you are not morally opposed to it (but then again, all you have to do is be thinking about transferring, and when you get the bills that thought is not a hard one to have).

My only other advice is be persistent with them if there is a scholarship you think you deserve. I had a ton of service and leadership things on my resume, but I didn't put all of them on my Creighton application because I wanted to focus on more of the academic side of things. I was not awarded the Service and Leadership scholarship, though I thought I was qualified. I talked with Financial Aid and was actually flat out told that I would not receive the scholarship, even though I had a better financial aid package from SLU. I talked with admissions, who resubmitted my application for the scholarship with all of my awards and what not and sure enough I got the scholarship. That was worth $2500 a year to me so it was definitely worth it!

I hope that gives you an idea. Don't be afraid to play schools against each other to get the best financial offer because when it comes to getting/keeping you they often are willing to deal. The other thing is going to Financial Aid may be fruitless, but see if you can't pick up an advocate. Good luck!

Sorry for this seemingly simple question but: what's it like during the winter months?

(Also, I think one of the reasons alot of Hawaii students gravitate to the school is because "word of mouth" seems to carry alot of weight on the islands. If person A entered Creighton in 2005 and had a great experience, he/she will pass it on to 2006 grads, who will pass it on to 2007 grads etc....for many islanders, most schools on the continent are a shot in the dark. Except, of course, the Ivies+Stanford+MIT which are well-known pretty much everywhere.)

That's okay, it is a concern. Let me premise this by the fact that I am from Denver so while I am used to a lot of snow I am not used to really cold temperatures. That being said, during my year there it did get very cold. I remember a few times that the actual temperature went below -10 and we had one whole week where we never got above zero! We didn't have a huge amount of snow (well, we did for Nebraska standards but just two big storms of between 6 inches and a foot) but it was quite cold. I still have pictures from my dorm room where it was so cold, and there was so much humidity, that we actually had ice about a centimeter thick on our window. SOLID ICE ON THE INSIDE!!!

All of this being said, it is still manageable. If you bundle up, it isn't horrible, but it does get quite cold.

I hope that helps some but do remember I was only there for a year, so it just depends on how that year was.

You mentioned SLU. How do you compare Creighton and SLU? Both schools are in my son's list of schools. We were able to visit SLU last summer but not Creighton. Any comments?

I must admit I have never been to SLU but I have friends there who love it. For me, Creighton just seemed to be the better fit. SLU is a bit bigger I believe and for some reason just didn't appeal to me as much, but I don't know why. They are both excellent schools however and I would say pretty comperable. They are both Jesuit schools so the types of community service are going to be similar. I must admit that I now am spoiled because I now attend a school that is ranked in the top 25 for food, but the food at Creighton is a bit weak honestly! Housing at Creighton is not a problem as they have recently built a bunch of new housing options for juniors and seniors which are VERY nice. However, you definitely pay your dues freshman year, but it is managable.
