Dance Major

My daughter (a hs junior) wants to major in dance, contemporary. We are looking at Goucher, Bates, Connecticut College, NYU, Barnard, Skidmore - any other suggestions for strong schools that offer a major or minor in dance? We visited Elon which she loved but she is more interested in an urban location.

Brown possibly? The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies may fit:
Theatre, Speech, and Dance at Brown University
?

Not sure. Just an urban school that shares some qualities with other schools you've listed.

The University of Michigan has a dance program: UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance - Department of Dance - Degree Programs

I'll confess to having heard about this in an article about Madonna.

I'd repost here Dance Major - College Confidential.

You'll get solid advice, and program specific info. The seperate performing arts subforums are a wealth of expertise, and I suggest them highly for anyone considering that path.

Good luck.

That's a good list so far. I would add Bennington (though rural) and Sarah Lawrence. Bard too, perhaps. These are for BA.

Ohio State, Point Park, University of Utah, Arizona State, several Florida Schools (Fla. State. Southern Fla.U.??), U. of Indiana, SUNY Purchase. Marymount Manhattan, Fordham/Ailey, Hartt at U. of Hartford. These offer BFA and maybe also BA.

It sounds like she does not want to go to a conservatory program. Does she want a BA rather than a BFA?

You might want to buy Dance Magazine's really excellent guide to colleges and conservatories, or the book "Creative Colleges," or Peterson's Guide for the Performing Arts.

But our list is a great start.
