So I'm a 12, obviously, and I was wondering about East Wheelock. Reading threads on here, I hear good things and bad things. I'm really social, not crazy party type, but I like to meet people and talk! EW seems like it has good things but it also has bad sides. Is it worth the risk that you have a good floor and people on your floor at EW or rather not risk it??

hello! im a fellow '12 so i don't know much about EW from PERSONAL experience, but i did visit it during dimensions and i had a really good impression of it. two '10s living in EW showed me around - the dorms were pretty spacious and nice, and there were plenty of restrooms in each floor and everything was really clean (always a plus). they did warn me,however, that EW people tend to be labeled as secluded, even antisocial types (even tho its not always true) just becus it tends to be quieter and far away from the parties and the green.

pros: one of the newest dorms on campus, nice clean rooms and common areas, right in front of the gym

cons:far away from most dining areas, far from frat row (and thus parties), the extra application u need to fill out

it's also substance-free (which, depending on ur preference, could be a pro or a con)

ive had to debate about this for a while - and i still am - but i think im leaning towards all-freshman housing just becus it's the first year and you want to get to know as many people as possible and get involved in as many activities as possible (even if that means constant disruptions and older dorms)

So here's the deal with East Wheelock: The dorms themselves are really pretty classy, big spacious rooms and its really not common there to have to sleep in the same room as your room-/suite-mate. They are a distance from frat row so they tend to not have the noise and other disruptions that usually accompany people coming back from the frats late at night (despite being close to Heorot/AD, and also despite the surprisingly thin walls).

Additionally, since students need to apply to get there, it tends to be self-selecting, as in, the students who don't really mind writing another essay will live there while the people who would rather play another game of pong before they start their homework, let alone an optional essay, tend to not.

BUT, that being said, since they group all the freshmen together, it does have the chance to be just as outgoing as any other freshmen dorm, but it is a crap-shoot. Generally it seems that one freshman floor always seems to be the outgoing one that always has doors open and people mingling, and the other three have the quiet, studious, doors closed, no thumping music after 10 pm students.

Honestly, I'd recommend normal on campus freshman housing if you want the environment where you leave your door open and people stop in to visit all day long. You can always apply to wheelock next year when you get a terrible housing lottery number.
