Dartmouth was one of the 4 colleges I picked to have my ACT scores sent to when I took that test back in May - but my ACT scores were pretty mediocre (28 composite, 27-28 on each subject, writing not offered (GRRR!)). My GPA (3.85/4.0) and class rank (4th of approx. 68) are OK, I think, and I'll be taking the SAT in October & SAT Subject Tests (Math Level 2, Chemistry & U.S. History) in November.
My question is: how many colleges should I be applying to besides Dartmouth? I'm especially interested in the Ivy League schools (excellent reputations & excellent financial aid), but understand that they can be very difficult to get into - so I'm thinking that the 5-8 college applications the College Board people recommend might not be enough. Other than the Ivies, anyplace with great financial aid and a decent reputation (and preferably east of the Mississippi, north of the Gulf Coast, and located someplace smaller than a huge city like Chicago) would do - especially if it's NOT the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (a "safety school" per Mom & Dad's insistence - because they'd make me share an off-campus apartment with my older brother who goes there to save on room & board). So how many colleges should I apply to in all?

Reason: left out info on qualifications for this college
