Transferring Help

Hi, I'm going to be an Emory student this fall and I want to keep my options open and transfer to other college if I have a chance to (not saying I'm not satisfied with Emory at all). What level of GPA would I need to obtain in my freshman year to get into Dartmouth safely?

There is no such thing at all. Just look at the Dartmouth 2008 Transfer board. Amazing students with 4.0's from top schools were denied consistently. Transferring into the Ivy Leagues is a completely different ball game. It's been said on this forum over and over again, but I will reiterate it: Your chances were substantially better as a freshmen than would be as a transfer student, especially with Dartmouth. There is no "safe," GPA range, because it's an absolute crap shoot. I really have no idea why you are already planning to transfer out of a school you have yet to even attend, let alone an amazing school, but it's going to be a very difficult game transferring anywhere next year, especially Dartmouth. With the generous new financial aid policy instituted this year and the cap lifted for need-blind International Aid, I bet you are going to see another record setting year.

Asking in Dartmouth College thread won't result in objective answers, but is Dartmouth University that much stronger than Emory University? I'm thinking of business and economics double major and Emory offers pretty good undergraduate business (I don't think Dartmouth offers BBA unless I'm mistaken). Well safe GPA for transfer to Emory is 3.5 to 3.8 so I guess that in itself is totally different. But what about education in general for undergraduate? Do you think there's much need to transfer from Emory in the first place?

Be advised that Dartmouth does not have an undergraduate business program. I am not trying to discourage you from trying to transfer into Dartmouth next year, but I really do not think there is any reason for you to leave Emory. Emory is an outstanding school, and you are truly blessed to have the opportunity to attend. The transfer process is a really long and drawn out one. I was wait listed by Dartmouth this year, and have yet to even hear back from the admission's committee on if they are even going to utilize the transfer wait list. My advice to you is considering you would like to major in both economics and business both stick it out at Emory for a year before you even consider trying to transfer. If after a year you think you would do better somewhere else, then give it a shot your sophomore year. You have only got four years of an undergraduate experience. Don't taint the first of those four years by trying to transfer without even having a valid reason why. It will only bring along headaches and heartache for the most part... Just my $.02...Wish you luck!

Thanks for the info. Yes I am thinking joining many extracurricular activities and live my first year without thinking about transfer, and by the end of the year, consider about transfer only if I believe that I can get better education (personally I don't think it'll be so dramatic of difference although I admit Dartmouth has that much more prestigious level being an Ivy). Wish you all the best in your college plans
