| Applying for the First Round, November 2007
Is anyone else on the board looking into applying to Deep Springs this fall? What other schools are y'all looking at, along with Deep Springs? Is there a single motivating factor to spend the time on the application for such a selective school, or is it the overall "feel" given off by the college?

If paying getting a scholarship of $50,000 is substantial then yes.

I'm definitely applying, although I doubt I'll get past the first round. My SAT is only 2070 (because of my embarrassingly low critical reading). I'm not sure if I absolutely want to go, though. I foundout about this college about 3 days ago and I've been obsessed with it since. Is anyone having second thoughts about possibly spending two years at the weirdest college ever? Or are you all all sure about it?

I am also applying. I'm pretty set on this school as my first choice. No second thoughts here. What did you write about for the analytical essay? Just curious. I wrote about relativism in terms of moral premises for individuals and societies.

Hey, I applied...sorry, but i just found this thread. I wrote my essay about imagination and hwo it is limited by our experiences, not by our intelligence, and all that....i really love this school! I think it would be so awesome to take a one-on-one class for a subject like the ones they have had.......

I *just* sent off my Deep Springs application and celebrated by buying a bottle of fake champagne and sitting on the curb and drinking it with my friends*- yeah were lame. I have very mixed feelings about my application especially my first essay (it just wasn't as good as I would have like), the fact that I submitted a poem for the second essay and I felt my reading list wasn't up to snuff (I had a real hard time remembering a the books I read last year and it was only about 30ish books, though some of them were massive textbooks that I read cover to cover). I feel glad that this app is out of my hands!
*I call them friends even though they think I'm a freak for applying to DS and think it is a labor camp/ human traffic operation.

so, yeah i also just applied. My reading list was only about twenty books, and most of them were also not that impressive. I feel pretty good about the essays though. i just want to go to this college so badly. the next month until the let us know if we got into the second round is going to pass so slowly.
i like the idea of submitting a poem for the second essay. sounds pretty cool.
good luck to all

where else are you guys applying to? Like your other top schools. My other tops:
Yale
Princeton
Johns hopkins
Northwestern
And what do you think will be the hardest thing to leave, if (or when) we get accepted?

I glad at least someone likes the idea of the poem!
Haha, yeah the late November- early December stretch is going to be hellish. Anyone know the exact date and way appcom will notify us?
My other top schools are:
University of Chicago
Swarthmore
Princeton
Columbia (pending motivation factor)
Georgetown (pending motivation factor)
Hmmm, I think the hardest thing to leave will be girls. It would be quite strange without them and many of my best friends are of the fairer sex.
How did you first hear about DS? Also, if you know your career plans or what you hope to pursue for you second two years of college could you please share them.
I first heard of Deep Springs through Loren Pope's book Looking Beyond the Ivy League. It said something to the effect of "A student who might be happy at Reed might abhor working on a ranch for two years at Deep Springs". I looked it up to see what it was about and fell in love.
As for a major, I would want to major in anthropology or international relations and would love to either be a professor of anthropology/ archeology or a diplomat!
