How is DePaul??

I'd love to visit, but I'm not sure I'd be able to...

I know the location is great but is it a nice campus? Are students really religious? How's the Art history program? Is there a lot of diversity? Study Abroad? Are there good scholarships for out-of-states? Social life? Any other descriptions about DePaul would be great.. thanks!

Lavitabassa- My D is in her so. yr at DePaul. She is not Catholic and that poses no prob at all (she has not stepped foot inside the church that is on-campus). Bcz of the housing squeeze, only freshmen live in dorms and others have a chance to live in college-owned apts or find their own apts nearby. The college abuts commercial/retail area and also tree-lined family neighborhod where parents are often out walking with their kids. The whole campus is something like 3 blocks by 4 blocks...very compact and the Brown Line elevated train is easy walk from campus. All students pay a yearly fee and have unlimited access to the "El" and public buses which makes getting around Chicago pretty easy.
D made great friends in her fresh dorm and now shares an apt with 3 of them. She is from a small town 1,000 miles away and LOVES Chicago and DePaul. Academics are good for her; she's smart, she studies and gets great grades but she's no bookworm. She's been to museums, theater, Blue Man Group, Improv, house parties, and great restaurants. When she was applying to DePaul they wrote and asked her if she would be interested in applying for a Community-Service Scholarship which included an essay and personal interview. She was one of the 30 chosen and now receives $6,500/yr to minor in Community Service and performs 30 hrs volunteer work each quarter. (she also has time for part-time job). DePaul really has a Trimester system in that the school yr is from Labor Day-Thanksgiving then off for 6 weeks. Go back for Jan 3rd until mid-March and get a week off. Then school ends the middle of June. It bums-out D that she doesn't get home till June 16th, after other college friends are home but that's a small price to pay for the life she has in Chicago. She has already talked to an adviser and plans on going abroad her Jr yr. (she can go abroad with programs from other colleges if Depaul doesn;t have what she wants...that's pretty standard at all colleges especially if your GPA is high enough). D was from a small high school with no footabll team so she doesn't care that Depaul has no football team/stadium and no Greek scene either. Some students may find that they want a huge campus with football team and frats...that's just not Depaul. You really should try and visit if interested; if you live far enough that you need to fly...look into Southwest flights into Midway. Good Luck!
