My daughter is a freshman there and loves the school. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them.

1050 questions....

Thanks for answering. What is your child's major? Did you have good sucess with the financial aid department? Know anything about science fellows? Honors?

Everybody like the college as much as I read they do?

Congrates on your daughter being in school.

My daughter is, right now, planning on majoring in psychology with a minor in inter-personal communications (whatever that is!). By the end of her freshman year she will have taken 8 course in 8 different departments. So she is definitely exploring her options. We did not apply for financial aid because we would not have qualified. She received a general merit scholarship of $7000 - and she tells me that is one of the smallest ones she knows of. She also applied for and received a LEAD scholarship. I don't know anything about any of the fellows or honor scholar programs. She was not a super academic kid in high school although she had good SAT's. I will say that so far she is doing great grade-wise - far better than high school

She says that she studies and works hard but not to the bone, dead tired, stay up all night hard. And she gets good grades as a result. The culture of the school is that when there is downtime during the week, students study. She thinks a lot of the students are very smart and they work hard during the week. So she follows the crowd that way (thank heavens). Social life revolves around greek parties - and there are a lot of them. But she knew that going in and was prepared for it.

She loves DePauw - as do most of the people she knows there. It's a sheltered place but a fun place. She's gotten involved and taken advantage of leadership opportunities. She will be going through sorority rush in a few months. 70% of the students go greek. I think that may move down however as they've built some new dorms that are themed and apt. style. So there's more living options for students who decide not to go greek. And they are very much accepted.

Again, she's very happy there because it fits her. She likes a "community". She wanted small, liberal arts, not too far from home, greek presence. DePauw is a very tight knit school with a strong alumni base. It's a comfortable place that's been very easy for her to get used to.

Any other questions, please let me know and good luck with the college search.

I was accepted at DePauw also, under Early Decision. Like your son, I was awarded a merit scholarship, though not quite as generous (guess I can only blame myself for that :/ ). I've always had an interest in journalism and electronic communications, so I plan on majoring in communications. From all I can tell and have been told, DePauw is the place for communications (well, for a small liberal-arts college). I am going to apply to the Media Fellows program, just as soon as I finish some reading for the essay. Anybody know anything about the fellows programs?

What I'm not so sure about, however, is going greek. I'd like to pledge a frat. I got the impression that there is pretty much a greek chapter for everyone, butI do have my reservations. I'm not a big jock sorta person, though I don't lock myself in my room with a computer and chemistry books on the weekends. So hopefully there will be a frat for me....If not, well--I don't know what I'll do. It's really greek, and I knew that before I applied........My parents (or at least my mom) aren't big on the idea.

Soooooooo, if anybody has any input, shoot.

Communications is one of the most popular majors there. And Media Fellows is an excellent program which guarantees an internship.

As for going Greek, when so many people are involved it loses its' "exclusivity" feel. I think there is a frat or sorority for everyone - I don't think it's a big deal getting into a frat at all. Even if you don't join a frat, the parties are open to everyone on campus. DePauw has deferred recruitment - meaning they'll be doing it in a few weeks during the first few days of 2nd semester. It's my daughter who's there and she's nervous about rush but I think it'll be okay.

If you'd really like some info, check out Livejournal. Search for DePauw under the interest tab and you'll get plenty of info there. Good luck.
