Dickinson or Colgate?

Discuss (student body, political leanings, party scene, academic reputation, etc)

Try U-N-I-G-0 dot com. Just eliminate the dashes. Also College *******. My D is trying to decide among Dickinson or Oberlin or Penn State---University Park

I'm having a little trouble following your suggested links, Plainsman. I couldn't find anything posted for Dickinson (or for most of the other Pope listed colleges we are considering) on u-n-i-g-o. Also, I couldn't decipher what is college*******.com. We are considering Dickinson seriously, although the cost is a real stretch, and there arn't many comments on this website, so I would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Did you try College *******? We have to type * in between letters. CC doesn't like posting competing websites. So here goes again:

College P*R*O*W*L*E*R

ha, sorry

i've actually only visited dickinson, but my dad was admitted to and visited colgate back in the day.

first off, as i'm sure you know, colgate has a better academic reputation and is harder to get into. both are located in tiny towns, but colgate's campus is prettier and larger (it's also a lot colder). because of the seclusion, both schools resort to a fair amount of greek like. both schools are great at languages, old, and somewhat preppy. they are actually pretty similar, but if you're looking for great academics, i'd go with colgate (most students/rankings will confirm this).

I live in Hamilton (where 'Gate is), and my brother went to Dickinson.

Colgate is definitely harder academically, and more people have heard of it. The comment about greek life is definitely true, and, outside of the 5 months of the year where there is snow on the ground, there will always be a party going on somewhere through the night. So it's definitely a great school academically, and also a big party school. What they probably won't tell you on tours though is that the town-gown relationship is awful. Most everyone in Hamilton hates Colgate students, and considers them all stuck-up, preppy jackasses. As such, there's a certain level of Gater Hunting (harassing of 'Gate students) that goes on, and drunk students will wreak havoc on houses in town. So there's a downside.

From what my brother told me of Dickinson, it is an absolutely great college, and he had a lot of fun there. He also said that town-gown relationships there are pretty bad as well, and townies would speed up to try and hit students crossing the road. I also believe he referred to Carlisle as the "Trucker capital of the world."

From my perspective, pick Colgate. Both schools will have plenty of parties, but Colgate also offers a lot academically and prestige-wise. The campus really is amazing, and the weather isn't anywhere near as people make it out to be. Yeah, there's snow here, but normally not more than a foot or so. Granted, this time of year is kind of sporadic (It was 65 yesterday, and now there's 3 inches of snow on the ground).

Hope that helped. If you have questions any other, I can try to answer them.
