Think beyond - Drew University

waveswatcher, the link i attached above is from the drew university website about the baldwin honors program. this is the first year for the baldwin honors program - congrats on getting accepted into it! apparently, according to the school newspaper here, they are only taking twenty kids from the accepted pile for it. it's a great opportunity!

ah - and i am a freshman at drew. if you have any questions regarding anything, just shoot me a message.

lasercat - I really appreciate your info about the Baldwin program. It doesn't seem like many people chat on this site and it is hard to get information that is not from the administration. I'd rather hear from kids that are at Drew. I have been accepted adn plan to be a poli sci major. The admissions officer said that I could design my own major, have you heard of that before? Is that common at Drew? It sure sounds like it leaves me open to do a lot of great things with my four years! Do you go into NYC very often? I have been to NYC a lot with my family and am really looking forward to going without my little sister and parents. I'm also REALLY interested in Drew's UN connection. Do you know anything about that? Sorry for all the questions, but it was great to see someone else on this site besides me!

hey waveswatcher, i am sorry i did not get back to you sooner - i was really, really sick. drew has a really strong political science department, and the strength of having nyc right there definitely helps. the un semester - one applies as a junior or senior and must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

also, you mention about creating your own major. the professors at drew are always helpful and understanding. if you want to create a major, which has been done, the professors will aid in your education quest. i think to propose your own educational course, one must go to the board and discuss what your intentions are. i hope this was helpful. if you need anything, feel free to message.

I'm a little nervous about acceptingthe Baldwin program. It might be a lot of pressure keeping up the GPA as a freshman and just getting used to college life and all. Lots to think about.

P.S. I'm sorry you were so sick - hope you are on the mend now. How did you handle being so sick and being away from home? Are the medical services at Drew that great?

Hey! Thought I would join into the conversation since I am also curious about this program...

I was accepted into Drew under the Baldwin Honors Program. I have read some about the program yet I would like to know more...I am also concerned as to how difficult it will be to maintain that 3.5 gpa.

I am going to Drew as a Biology major with the intent of gaining entrance to a Vet School.

For a 3.5, I hope the financial award is good....and the laptop saves you a lot of money also.
I know Bio can be difficult but there is nothing wrong with trying, you might do very well. Ask about how long they give you to bring it up if it drops below that number. Some schools will give you 1 semester to get back before they tell you to leave a program.

Yea, I get 18,500 along with the free lap top and being in the Honors Program. And since my major is so specifically driven to Veterinary School I have my advisor to help me out. So I am guessing I will be in her office a lot!

Thanks for the tip to ask about how long I have to bring it back up again...I'll definitely find that out.

I think that's a good idea, my son had good advisors and being a small school, they really get to know you. Also ask, (with great confidence in your ability) if for some reason I couldn't do it, what ball park figure would I get without it?
I think you'll be fine, Drew usually has a good eye for talent and who will succeed although they will give a chance to someone outside of their range. If they thought you would be a good candidate, I'm sure you would, but it doesn't hurt to know all your options.

I was also accepted into the Baldwin Honors Program along with my friend Chris. We are both definetly going to Drew and have both sent in our deposits. I got 23,500 a year and the free laptop. My friend and I are both planning on majoring in Biology. Does anybody know anything else about the program besides what is on the website about it and the school newspaper??

It's hard to say, even my son who goes there, doesn't know very much. It's the first year coming up, so you guys will cut your teeth on it : )
I like the free lap top, they used to always give you one at Drew and the year my son went, 2006, they changed that, but the tuition didn't go up. It was expensive, but he never had a problem with it.

Congratulations! It's May 1 and you've all survived! So how many of you ultimately decided to go to Drew as Baldwin Honors scholars?
