What are Drew students like?

Sorry to invite stereotypes, but what types of students does Drew attract, e.g., preppies; intellectuals; grinds; drinkers?

Do students leave on the weekends or do kids stay and do things on campus?

i am a current freshman at drew university and even though drew is known as a "small, private liberal arts college" - there is still diversity within the classes in terms of personalities. drew once had the stigma of being a "rich kid" school but i have yet to come across that stereotype.

you have the preppies, the jock bros, the intellectuals, the hippies, the hipsters - a fusion of all "stereotypes". you will definitely find your group of friends at drew university. there is not one exact type of student - which i think is awesome.

some students do leave on the weekend but it's pretty rare for this campus to be completely empty. once you establish a group of friends, it's obvious there will be opportunities to go into the city or nearby morristown. of course, there are parties on the weekend - like every college campus, but if one does not like to "party", drew has fun activities like local musicians performing and plays.

You talk about diversity of personalities, but what about backgrounds? My S is a multicultural person who grew up out of the States. Are there international students? Do they fit in there? Are most students from NJ? We visited Drew last summer and the adcom person was floored when my son said where he was from, so it raised a concern with us as how international students may fit at Drew.

these are statistics from drew university's website on the diversity of the class of 2012

# of states represented: 23
# of countries represented: 7

% from NJ: 53%
% from NY/CT/PA: 22%
% from other states/international: 25%

i have classmates who came here from jamaica, afghanistan, and japan - among other countries. i feel there is a solid group of international students here. in regards to the new jersey issue, half of the students are from new jersey but there are plenty of students who are attending drew from california, wisconsin, texas, and the like. i hoped this helped. any other questions - just shoot me a message.

My son has told me the same thing, the past year or so, they have more international and geographical diversity. His roommates have been up and down the east coast and the midwest, but he knows students from CA, Ohio, Jamaica and other countries.

Guess I'll throw my two cents in here as well...

The current president (Weisbuch) has made and kept a strong commitment to increasing diversity at Drew. My D knows students from Africa (Nigeria, Ghana), India, Pakistan. In addition, she's met many people who are first generation Americans whose families are from all over the world. Compared to similar colleges, I think Drew is very impressive in this regard. The downside, as cdover found out, is that Drew isn't particularly generous with financial aid for international students. But unfortunately I think that's fairly typical at most US colleges these days.
