Congrats! Questions?

Just wanted to post a quick note of congratulations for those of you who'll take up the offer, among other things, to become my future fellow alumni Just wanted to mention if you have any questions, I'm a Pratt faculty member, Duke alum, and I've been here...almost 20 years (yikes) so fire away. There are also a lot of other folks on here who Know Things. Take care and see (some of you) this Fall-

Thanks for your willingness to answer questions! I've been accepted to the Pratt School as a BME major, and I've been wondering how easy it is to take classes from the Trinity School. I'm thinking about double majoring in Political Science or Computer Science, but I don't want to declare a major until I take some classes and weigh my options. Is there a decent amount of flexibility? Also, is there a large number of Pratt students who choose to pursue a double major in the Trinity School?

hi, thank you for willing to answe questions.
I got enrolled in Trinity and I am an international student. I'm a lit bit worried about my financial aid package. Will it be enclosed in the package sent to us? Is it possible that I got enrolled but I can't afford to go to Duke? Has this ever happened? I am a little bit worried...
Thank you.

Hi Dr. G, thank you for your time and effort. Just wondering, are there internships or co-op programs open to Pratt students who didn't apply for FA?

Mornin all! - here goes:

rylz: You can take pretty much any class you want, from Pratt or Trinity. It would be good to get with your advisor and see which classes might be a "best fit" for both a Pratt degree and and Trinity major, minor, or certificate you want to pursue. Pratt students have a Trinity distribution requirement (5 courses in different areas; two of these can be satisfied by APs). There are quite a few doubles, most notably in Economics and Computer Science. QWuite a few in Math and PPS as well.

littlepigmm - Assuminug you did *not* apply with "no financial aid interest," the Financial Aid office should be in touch. More information is available at the International Student Aid page if you haven't been there already. I don't know the exact process, but there should be an award letter at some point. Just stay in casual contact with the Financial Aid office.

deviantdevil - We do not have a formal five-year co-op program the way many schools do, but we do have an administrative unit that helps students find internships - the Corporate and Industry Relations folks. There are also on-campus jobs (though some are restricted to work-study) and teaching/lab assistant possibilities. For example, in the Fall, I hire about 36 teaching assistants for my Computational Methods class; most of them are sophomores and I don't even look to see if they are work study.

Can a student in Trinity take classes in Pratt? Can they even major in something from Pratt?

Trinity students can certainly take Pratt classes. However, to major in any engineering discipline, you have to be in Pratt. In fact, most/all Pratt classes do *not* count towards graduation in Trinity - the exceptional cases are actually cross-listed so that you are, for all intents and purposes, taking a Trinity class. On the flip side, students in Pratt will definitely take classes in Trinity, and they can also satisfy major, minor, and certificate requirements for Trinity departments.

This may sound like a very shallow question, but is there any marked difference between recruiting by BB investment banks at (Harvard/Wharton) and Duke? I've heard conflicting reports, some saying that you're pretty much set if you go to Harvard/Wharton and others saying that even though the numbers at H/W are probably greater, that just reflects a stronger, more business oriented pool of students. So, I guess my question is this, assuming that I go to Duke, get a good GPA (I'm hoping for a 3.7), and maintain a passion in the financial sector, should it be that difficult for me to land an internship/job? Also, are most jobs that Duke grads getting "front office" or "back office" jobs?
