Wait Listing

Does anyone know the percentage of students that get in off the waiting list? Thanks!

Well, if you search the forum history in this forum, you'll see that the past few years have seen a fluctuation in students admitted from the waitlist. A few years ago, a hundred or so were admitted, but that was a fallout from the lacrosse scandal. Last year the number was significantly less.

As for this year, I'm hoping for the best. Everything is pretty uncertain, even at this point, because of the changes in financial aid/early action programs at other top schools. I'm absolutely dying to get into Duke too, so I guess we'll just have to wait another few weeks to find out for sure.

Last year, I think some people found out as early as late April that they were off the wait-list.

I haven't been able to find Duke's Common Data Set -- maybe someone else can post a link if they've found it.

I did come across this 3/28/08 article that makes a vague reference to the waitlist and the class of 2012:

Duke Offers Admission to 3,342 Applicants

Quote:

Guttentag said it’s difficult to predict how many students will accept Duke’s offer of admission, in part because of changes in financial aid practices and early-decision programs at peer institutions.

“There’s a little more uncertainty for all of us this year in predicting the exact number of students accepting our offer of admission. Normally we prefer to admit about 50 students from the waiting list, but we’re less sure this year how many we’ll be able to admit. We might end up admitting a few more but, given the increased response we’ve seen so far to our on-campus programs, we might end up admitting fewer. It’s an interesting year,” he said.
*Emphasis added

^I would think so. I have met more enthusiastic p-frosh this year than I did last year, as a p-frosh myself. More people seem to be planning and willing to turn down lower Ivies for Duke than last year.

I wrote a short letter about why I thought I would fit in at Duke that was definitely better than the original short answer I sent in with my application back in December. I was much more specific and enthusiastic.

I also sent in an updated resume.

And it worked out! I got the phone call today
