I was accepted to the class of 2012; however, I want to defer my admission for one year and take a year off in between.

Does anyone know Duke's policy on this? I've looked through their website, their bulletin, trawled the materials they gave me and the internet, to no avail.

I'm assuming I will need to write a letter applying for permission to take this gap year, but will I also need to send a deposit now, or just the letter? What about the reply form? And does the letter need to contain a plan of how I intend to spend my gap year, or just reasons for taking a year off, or what?

Any help at all is appreciated.

Call the admissions office. Why would you think that the internets would know better than the school itself?

Um...thanks. Actually, at the time of my original post, it would have been a good 12 hours before the admissions office opened (I live in Singapore) and I was just hoping to get some help a little sooner than that.

Just to follow-up in case someone else happens to do a search on the same subject - I just got off the phone with the admissions office, and Duke does offer the option of deferring your enrollment. Basically, you need to write a letter to the Dean of Admissions detailing your plans for the coming year. You would send in your reply slip confirming your acceptance of Duke's offer along with this letter, and around January of the next year, Duke will re-confirm your matriculation the next fall. As per the usual with deferred enrollment, Duke's only stipulation is that you cannot enroll in another college full-time.

Does anyone happen to have a pro/con list of deferring? Lately, I've been thinking about Deferring to travel my dad and work for him, but would I still be eligible for benefits like financial aid if I did?
