Help a new dukie out...

Hi guys! I'm just trying to make sure that my schedule isn't too hard or too easy. If you can, please give your comments, questions, criticisms, or concerns about my proposed schedule. FYI, my enrollment date is tomorrow at noon.

Monday
Intro to film: 4:25 - 7:15

Tuesday
Intro to Philosophy: 8:30 - 9:45
Writing 20: Election Metaphors & Media: 10:05 - 11:20

Wednesday
Intro to African American Studies: 8:30-9:45
Intro to film: 4:25 - 7:15

Thursday
Intro to Philosophy: 8:30 - 9:45
Writing 20: Election Metaphors & Media: 10:05 - 11:20

Friday
Intro to African American Studies: 8:30-9:45

My goal in life is to start my own film and media production company. Alot of the classes you see before you were of force, not by choice. The classes I wanted to take were full. I thought the intro to film class would be appropiate. However, I have heard some not so nice things about the class and the teacher. I chose the African American Studies and the intro to philosophy class because there was nothing else available that interest me and ratemyprofessor.com said that the teachers were engaging and the class was stimulating. I chose Writing 20: Election Metaphors & Media because I thought it would be a good class, the teacher was given rave reviews, and I've been very engaged in this year's presidential election.

Before you judge me with the easiness of my schedule, I just want to say that I really want to ease my way into college life and becoming a responsible adult, and I'm not trying to take the hardest classes in the world. Plus, I know alot of the dukies on here are premed or engineering majors so my classes probably don't hold alot of weight since none of them are math nor science related. With that being said, I suck at math and science....really badly. I got like a 19 on the ACT in Math. That's how bad I suck. Thankfully, I'm not going to Duke to major in anything math-like. Like I said earlier, my ultimate goal in life is to start my own film and media production company so I am leaning towards majoring in eglish and minor in theatre and earn a certificate in film/video/digital.

Once again, please be easy on me...

In addition, my new class set up due to the rigors of registration is intro to african american studies, planning the documentary film, introduction to film, cardio-kickboxing, and First-Year Seminar - Acting basics.

Oh...sorry for jumping the gun. I'm just really anxious about this whole college thing and I am so afraid of making a mistake or being seen as the girl who is taking the easy way out.

I don't think anyone at Duke will scoff at your easy schedule, on the contrary, I would think many people would be very envious of your schedule...especially the engineers.

I asked what you WANTED to take, because it might give some insight into your proposed schedule. I'd hate to think none of your first choices were available. BTW, aside from a lot of writing, I thnk my D's schedule is pretty "cautious" too, and she is fine with it ( and she NEVER comes to CC , either!).

You might not have a lot of class time, but your schedule looks pretty terrible to me. You have 830 classes 4/5 days and a 3-hour evening class 2 days a week. Basically all of your classes are bunched up really early or really late; what are you going to do with the gigantic blocks in the middle because nobody's going to be available.

I wouldn't worry about the ease too much; that part looks good for me. See if you can find similarly interesting classes at decent hours tho...

I don't think the schedule is that bad. Granted, the morning classes will be a bit of a challenge, but other than that, having gigantic blocks of time in the afternoon is very helpful for stuff like...a job, clubs, activities, sports, studying, homework, etc. You could even use it for a power nap here and there!

Having a class at a decent hour will only break up those blocks of time into probably two pieces, morning and late afternoon. Most people would sleep in the morning given the choice so that effectively cuts down on the free time available.

With this schedule and good management of sleep and studying the OP can potentially have more free time available in continuous blocks.

What is it with young people and sleeping-as-an-activity anyway? Is that worth it's own thread?

Sleep is not the topic of this thread. I'm merely pointing out that free time in the morning will often be used for sleeping. My friend tried not to schedule morning classes last fall thinking he'd get up to do some work. That happened maybe 3 days for the entire semester.

On the other hand, sleep is a legitimate activity considering how little of it college students (at least those I know) get. Being able to set aside time for a nap is a cherished luxury.

Sleep is not the topic of this thread.

Yeah I know, sorry. Just triggered a thought . I guess I'm wondering if a seperate thread on the subject makes sense to persue.
