just got back from Durham

and overall I enjoyed the trip.
Something about the campus I didn't like at first. But it grew on me
Why is all the grass dead
and how annoying is the bus to east?

The food seemed better than Penn
the girls were definitely more attractive
And for those who say Duke has a lot of asians
Please go visit ANY UC and then come back
I felt like I was in a sea of white people
though the (relatively few) asians I saw were not the hardcore fobby ones you would see at most UC campuses (I'm from Ca).

Basically I have no idea between Duke or Penn
but just thought I would share!

many things make me wanna say I would choose Duke
but theres this something I cant pinpoint that makes me wanna just pick Penn

whatever

When I visited they said they were in the middle of a big drought and so they couldn't water the grass, which was why it was dead. I didn't feel like there were too many asians either. But one thing I noticed was the girls weren't as good looking as I was expecting, from what I had heard.

I thought blue devils days was not that great, it didn't really "attract" me. Just little things, like they only gave you 9 dollars for your lunch but made your parents pay. Though i have to say...campus is nice

Yeah I'm not gonna lie
Blue Devil Day was probably the poorest put together school visit out of UCSD, UCLA, and Penn
It just seemed like... um heres a list of things to do... good luck trying to see what you want
My dad was majorly put off by it
and I was just kind of like... yeah that's pretty lame...
But in the end the school just sort of fits more

I'm still questioning Penn though... I honestly change my mind every 3 seconds

I'm sorry you all weren't thrilled with Blue Devil Days...we work hard at admissions to make sure everyone enjoys it, so I hope you all submitted any comments/suggestions you have since alot of people seemed to not like it.

To the tour guide question...it's a volunteer organization. We do it because we enjoy it, love Duke, and want everyone else to basically

Here are my responses to a few of the questions/comments:

Why is all the grass dead? Yeah- the drought is probably a good explanation. We haven't been able to water and it hasn't rained much until about 3 weeks ago, SO hopefully it will get better/more aesthetically pleasing soon. I saw people out seeding this past week.

and how annoying is the bus to east? It can get pretty irritating, I'm not gonna lie. If you're at the bus stop after, say, 1:15-2:30 class or 2:50-4:05 class, you have to be a bit more aggressive to get on a bus, but in general, if you time it right you can usually just hop on and get where you need to go. It's sort of a necessary evil, but for the most part you get used to it.

And for those who say Duke has a lot of asians
Please go visit ANY UC and then come back

though the (relatively few) asians I saw were not the hardcore fobby ones you would see at most UC campuses (I'm from Ca): I hate that this discussion keeps coming on. IMHO any ethic background is sort of irrelevant. Everyone that goes here works hard and loves Duke. There are plenty of Asians, African-Americans, Caucasians, people from all over the world.

I personally loved Blue Devil Days. I went on the 18th and it was an incredible day--there was so much going on at Duke (an international festival, AAU tournaments, a dinner for Duke basketball, parties), the weather was perfect, and the all of the kids I met were sweet.

I enjoyed how it was laid out b/c it gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do and when. I met professors and they offered to show me exactly what they did in their labs later in the day. I would say Duke's admitted student day was far superior to Vanderbilt's..

So.. I don't know how you wouldn't have a good time..

I believe I sent the wrong message about blue devil days
while I didnt like the setup really
the tour guides were great
the admin presentations were awesome and everyone was really friendly
and although I walked in thinking the department fair would be a waste of time, I really got a lot out of it and learned new, specific things

How bad could it possibly be if I was basically convinced to go

lucky you, my tour guide was terrible. after about ten minutes i just left the tour and went back to bryan center to have lunch because it was so uninformative and boring. she honestly didn't sound like she had been trained and didn't even do the walking backward thing that seems like basic tour guide protocol.

i thought the introduction was faaaarr superior to the one at hopkins' open house, but i found their engineering seminar sort of pointless. it almost seems like duke doesn't care about selling you the school, like they just expect you to love it. and maybe they're not that far off because i did really enjoy it, despite what i found to be poor organization. and to be fair i was really tired and didn't stay the entire day.

I hate to ask this this way, but did you primarily want a sales pitch?

aha our tourguide had never given a tour before
and we alll split into groups and it was like... 3 people in ours
so she was like... hm we can just join this other group
so we had 2 tourguides so that was kind of cool

I don't think the ability to walk backwards is a fair way to judge...
