If you can describe the Earlham experience

Just wondering what makes the Earlham experience unique--how do you explain the college to others.

I know it is an intimate and challenging place that has Quaker roots. I know that it has a good Asian Studies department, and that it is open-minded to different people and cultures. But, what stands out most?

My S2 goes to Earlham, IsleBoy. He is a quirky intellectual, has lots of great ideas but is still unformed in many ways. I think his first semester of school at Earlham has been fantastic for him socially as well as academically as he is accepted, challenged, encouraged. He has not been an A student, but that was never the point for him: he likes to think, analyze, discuss. He has made tons of friends. I think it has been a wonderful experience, so far so great! He is also interested in Japanese! They have a fabulous Asian Studies program.

A little down-side: the food is bad enough that he has asked for cooking equipment for Christmas!

LOL...about the food. I have a friend who said the same thing, she loved the Earlham experience though.

The friend who applied to Earlham is similar to your son. For him, it's about the life of the mind, although my friend was a little out of place in HS.
