MY D recieved a $9000 scholarship this past week; still not sure she will choose Earlham (I think Beloit is trumping it; also gave her $14K).

The Bonner Scholars program is a need-based scholarship with leadership and community service components. It's a national program that Earlham participates in. Here's their web site on it: http://www.earlham.edu/~bonner/ .

Hi,

Both my daughters are Bonner Scholars at Earlham. It may even have been my younger daughter that called you! She's been doing those phone calls every evening this week.

It's a very nice program. The amount of money is pretty modest but the Bonner work is worthwhile. Both girls are enjoying being a Bonner. They do 10 hours per week volunteer work at a local nonprofit (my younger daughter does more because she enjoys the work). They get a stipend. It also has a summer work component. They work during the summer for a non-profit (anywhere-not in Richmond) and get a stipend. The program is great for the campus/community relations. Bonners put in hundreds of service hours.

For that reason, and probably others, Earlham tries very hard to take care of their Bonners. The way the put it in the written material is that they "try to meet 100% of the Bonner's need". Both girls had fin. aid packets before finding out that they had been selected to be a Bonner. When they got the Bonner Scholarship the Fin aid packet was revised. It was *much* better. Very little in loans but lots and lots of grant money.
