Will D need a car at Earlham?

Using a tool I saw posted on another thread, I chekced Earlham's "walkability" score -- the result 46/100 which the walk-score site characterizes as "car dependent."

To what extent is this true? What stores/services/amenities, if any, are walking distance from the campus?

Thanks.

Hi!

Earlham now has a stop on campus for the local transit company and can travel all over town on it. If D will be doing community service in Richmond or the county, vans from Earlham will deliver and pick up D to and from the site.

Only about 20% of students have cars, so many do without. Occasional shuttles sponsored by the student development office take students to and from major cities.

Coffee shops, video store, pizza joints, 24 hour restaurant, and grocery store are all within four blocks of campus!

I would concur with rickeje -- my daughter just finished her freshman year at Earlham and did fine without a car. She was able to get occasional rides home for the weekend with another student from our hometown. We did, however, give her a car to use for travel over spring break.

As other people have said one can do fine without a car. There is a Dominos, grocery store, Tim Hortons, video store, diner all within walking distance and a KFC/Tacobell. Also if you want to walk a little farther there is a CVS about 14 blocks away. A car is nice for things you can't get in Richmond ( like Indian food) but it is not essential.
