Hi. I'm a current student at Eckerd College. I saw your post and I thought I'd try and give my two cents about the school. In short, I think Eckerd is one of the best choices I've made in my life, for a number of reasons. First of all, the campus is small, the classes are small, and there's a homely feel to the environment. All of this is great, but what's the most important thing about this? Well, your professors are there all the time to support you and answer your questions, to discuss class topics as well as go on trips with the clubs they sponsor. They are always available by phone or email, and many don't mind if you call them at home. Most of the professors come to Eckerd because they realize the value of the student mentor role in shaping the education of a liberal arts student. Some of the profs even have parties and get-togethers at their houses, and sometimes even classes.
That's just one of the things I like about Eckerd. There are plenty more. The classes are amazing, and you get a great education for the amount you pay. Most students get a certain amount of financial aid from EC, which is good if you need it.
Also, our study abroad department was rated number one in the country for the percent of students who study abroad (100%). Most students, including myself, study abroad more than once. Actually, our school owns a 200-year-old row house right in London near the British Museum, and I had the chance to stay there for one of our January short-terms, studying the arts, going to museums, and seeing a million different plays, ballets, operas, and other performances. I also did an independent study last January in Guatemala. I set the entire thing up myself and got credit for it - this is a nice thing we have because if you don't like any of the trips, or you want to do your own thing, all you have to do is have a good idea for an independent study and find a sponsor. But don't worry, if that's not your thing, that's ok,because we have a lot of amazing trips. We even had an Antarctica trip a few semesters ago. When people ask me what I don't like, I honestly have a hard time figuring that one out, because there really aren't that many things that dissappoint me. It's a little rainy at times, but the weather is mostly gorgeous. The diversity on campus may be a little lacking, because lots of the people that go here are rich white kids whose parents pay for their education. But we do have a lot of international students, and it seems as though the majority of the population here comes from the Northeast. Lots of people from the Bahamas, too.
