Travel Tips

Am I the only Elon applicant from the West Coast???
I am really confused on what the best way to plan travel for the auditions.
I am attending the Mar 14th auditions. I need travel advice. When should I leave? the night before or something? will i need to stay a night somewhere? where is the best place to stay?

Any help would be great... Im lost!

Hi Liz,
Yes You should leave the day before! I don't think you can fly direct to NC from any airport in LA, Call Elon and find out what they suggest as far as a Hotel goes. If you are under 18, that might be an issue. Also ask Elon if there is an airport shuttle to the college. You can do this alone providing you plan very well. Don't check (carry it on) anything you might need for your audition! Write a list of every step from leaving your house until the time you walk back in, and make sure you have it covered. My daughter has attended all her auditions alone and with careful planning, it can be done.
Good Luck!!!

Hi Liz,
You can fly into Greensboro (about 30 minutes from Elon) or Raleigh Durham (about 45 minutes). Yes you will need to get there the night before since Elon is a full day process. Usually you observe a class (most likely an acting class) have a group dance audition, meet with your accompanist to go over your songs, have a group meeting with Cathy McNeela, the head of MT department and all parents and auditioning students. They will have some current students sing, and talk about the program. Then you will have your individual song/monologue audition. They should send you a schedule ahead of time telling you the order of your day.
For transportation from the airport, Elon only runs shuttles for students at holiday/break times. And they only run a couple of times a day then. But, we have used an airport sedan service. They run from either airport. Greensboro phone is 336-263-3458. The Raleigh number is 919-942-5332. We had them pick my daughter up at Greensboro airport. They met her at baggage claim and they drove right to her dorm. It is expenseve. I forget, but about $65 from Greensboro and maybe $75 from Raleigh. Something like that anyway. But she said the woman who drove her was very nice. Since then, fortunately she has friends with cars who have provided transportation.
As to where to stay, try the Acorn Inn. It is the only hotel within walking distance to Elon. It is near the performing arts building where you will be spending your day. They have a website. There are only 12 or 13 rooms, so they might be booked up already.
Good luck. PM or email me if you have more questions. I'd be happy to try to help.

Liz - no you are definitely not the only person auditioning for Elon from the West Coast My D auditioned in October, and although we are from Northern California, the travel arrangements you have to make are essentially the same. Because of the time difference, and because there are no direct flights, you should plan on leaving by mid-day on Thursday, which implies an overnight stay. I checked the flights into GSO (Greensboro) from LAX and you have some options on Northwestern (via Memphis) and United via Chicago, both around $350 roundtrip. By the time we booked, the Acorn Inn was sold out and we stayed at the Country Suites.

From your post, it looks as if you may be traveling by yourself; if so, I'd recommend setting up a car service on beforehand like nydancemom mentioned. We rented a car, which is a lot cheaper, but this will not be possible if you are 18 years old.
