I am the mom of a high school junior and planning to schedule a campus visit. Any recomendations on what not to miss while we are there?

Try to see a production and try to attend one or two performing arts classes (need to set up ahead of time). I recommend this for all schools. It's also good to try to do the general campus tour through admissions and to ask if an MT student can show you around the performing arts space.

Elon is easily accessible to the interstate, and here are some of the hotels at the 141 exit at Burlington:

Another great place to stay is The Acorn Inn. (336-585-0167). It has a separate livingroom and a jetted tub and the best beds ever. They have a nice breakfast. Best of all, it is only one block from the college and just around the corner from the theater.

We like to stay in Graham when we go to Elon at the Comfort Suites. It's an exit or two down the highway, has free breakfast and a little health center. Enjoy your visit, we are making the road trip down for parent weekend and I can't wait!

My D will be auditioning on Nov.21 and we are coming from Fla. She is a dancer and we are excited about being there for their dance concert. Do you recommend flying in to Greensboro or Raleigh Durham? Most of our choices get in at night and I am a little nervous about driving? Is either airport easier to get around? Is there anything I should know about renting a car and driving? I would appreciate any feedback...

Elon is easily accessible from both airports. I prefer Greensboro because it is a much smaller airport,you get your car right there and it's a little closer to the school.(about 20 minutes) I will use Raleigh occasionally when the price into Greensboro is high. I use Thrifty car rental at both airports since they give an Elon discount. The discount code is on the Elon website under Visit. Best wishes to your D. Elon is a great place.

Pohsmom, last year the airport area/surrounding area was undergoing construction. We flew in the night before (into GSO), rented a car, and got somewhat lost (it was very dark and I lost track of which way was East, West, North and South

), as the directions I had printed on my computer on beforehand did not "include"

the roads that were closed because of construction. Although this construction may be way over, I still highly recommend adding the expense of renting a car that includes a GPS gizmo, or if you have one of those TomTom's

at home to bring that with you.

This actually applies to most schools that are located in areas you are not familiar with. I generally made out ok with Yahoo printed directions, but I am the first to admit I don't have the best of "Girl Scout" instinct in this regard, and so we allowed ourselves some extra time to get lost every now and again. It kind of became a recurring theme on my D's audition trails...

Airports - look at flights to both GSO (Greensboro), about 30 minutes from campus to west, and RDU (Raleigh - Durham), about 45 minutes from campus to east. Use the airport with the cheapest flights. GSO would be preferred if pricing is identical, but for us, RDU is usually cheaper. Look at all the airlines, as prices vary from one time to the next. We check all options each time traveling. Also, RDU is a straight shot along I-40 and fairly easy. So is GSO, but the recent construction near airport really has made that airport a little bit more confusing - I agree!

We always stay at Acorn Inn if available. It is the only place to stay that's walking distance from campus. The other hotels mentioned are nice, but convenience is key for us. If you can't get into Acorn Inn and have trouble finding a hotel at Burlington (this will be true if you go 11/7, homecoming weekend), we love the O'Henry Hotel in Greensboro, about 22 miles from campus.

Another reason to stay at Acorn Inn if possible during auditions - they run a lottery for rooms for parent's weekend and homecoming. You cannot be part of the lottery unless you've stayed there at least once. Parent's weekend usually comes up in Sept.

My son usually helps with auditions - sometimes with singing, but usually with dance, so look for the small guy!

Also, if you plan to audition 10/31 or 11/7 and see Sweeney Todd, tickets go on sale 3 weeks before the opening of 10/30. You may need to check with the performing arts office to see if you should schedule the show on the Friday night of auditions, since auditions can run late. You may want to go Thurs., 10/30 or stay over to see one of the Sat. night shows.

Just got the audition confirmation today for Nov.21. Put a request form in at the Acorn Inn for 2 nights. Hopefully we will be able to see the late dance show Friday since they mentioned auditions could go as late as 9pm. Unfortunately we can't stay a 3rd night. My D will call and see if she can get tickets and arrange to make a 8:30p show that night.

Need a little more advice...The owners of Acorn Inn have a shuttle service for $65 each way to/from RDU. Even though a car rental is a bit cheaper would you recommend I use the service? My understanding is the hotel is walking distance to campus so I wouldn't need a car. Any suggestions?
