Kayla,
Those are the statistics for Elon, the entire university, not its MT Program. I do not think a small program within the school will have any published ethnic distribution stats. As far as acceptance to the university, you are an URM which is a "hook". However, you are an international student, which colleges also want but not all their slots are available for internationals.

Next, looking at the BFA program itself, I am sure most programs value a diverse group of students in their make up. It makes for a better educational experience for starters, to have a diverse group. Also, it terms of theater, it is helpful to them to have diverse types of students to fill various roles in casting and to present a variety of types upon graduation. So, actually, being an URM is a bit helpful to your chances, as most programs will want some URM students in their class.

But there are other issues on your end when deciding where to matriculate. For instance, you need to look at the make up of the entire school and how diverse it is and inquire of other URM students who attend what their experiences are like. That will be different on various campuses. For instance, the experience for a minority student on a campus like Elon where 89% are white compared to at Harvard where 54% of th student body is white, will likely differ. So, feel out these things at all your schools. Talk to people who go, when it comes down to making your decision. Feel it out, as statistics do not tell the whole experience.

I believe an applicant should like EVERY school on their list or else not bother to apply to the school. Most kids will like some naturally over others but they should be happy to attend any school on their list or it makes no sense to apply. Schools have differences. When deciding where to matriculate, students should brainstorm all the things that they find appealing about each school on their accepted list and the pros/cons and facts about each and see how closely each list matches up with their personal college criteria to find the best fit (not the "best college").

I would discourage you from trying to pick a "top choice" at this point. Explore all your schools for their merits and why they appeal to you. Having a first choice in such a competitive process can sometimes be a set up for disappointment. It is natural to have favorites but try to have a more favored pile and then a favored (but not as much as first pile). Hopefully you like them all because it is hard to have an outcome with a lot of choices when the admit rates at these BFA programs are so low. You only have to be admitted to one school. Hopefully you like every school on your list and that is why you applied to those schools. So, if you get into even one, you have "won". A choice would be great, of course. Getting into a school on your favorite PILE, is like a cherry on top. Keep an open mind.

It is important for all students to have the appropriate list and that the list be balanced in order to yield SOME acceptances. This is for all applicants. Each MT students' list of schools should differ in terms of their qualifications, let alone preferences. There is a tendency to apply to "name schools" when there are a lot of options out there.

Hang tight and see where you get in and then go from there. No need to zero in on having to pick a top choice. In fact, it is my belief that you'd be in a better place emotionally to be open to ALL of your options at this juncture. That is what my daughter tried to do. In fact, she could have been happy at any of the options. Better to stay open right now.

Best of luck to you dear. Many are rooting for you.

Hi Kayla,

Soozie is so right. My D is also still waiting to hear from several schools and has been put on a waitlist at Elon. She's really hoping to actually get in, but she's keeping her mind open to all of the schools. I know that the waiting is hard. Have you considered calling Elon? It's possible that you have not heard because you are out of the country, but I think that they've contacted many, so it might be good to call and ask. Good luck sweetie, we ARE all rooting for you!

Sarahsmom has a good idea to call and ask Elon if your decision has been mailed yet or when they predict it will be because mail to Barbados takes longer and you'd have an idea of the time frame, but do not expect decisions from colleges over the phone. I don't know if Elon has mailed out to everyone or not. I have a client who recently was admitted and I was assuming these have been mailed but I have no idea and so if it helps, call and ask the timing. If it is by snail mail, it may take the snail longer as he has to swim to your house.

Hi Kayla,
I asked my daughter who is home for spring break about diversity in her pgm. She said that there were 3 black kids in her whole grade acting program. I believe they had 16 total or so what's that for a percentage rate? 18%? She doesn't know about MT kids. One of the girls left tho to get married(!) She also said that one of the 2 major drama shows this year was "Blues for an Alabama Sky" which was all black (8 or so characters/US.) She did tech for the show and there were no whites at all in the show. So that may mean 8 out of appx 110 kids total in the BFA dept. which figures to about 7%. Same as the overall percentage rate?

kayla,

Please take care of yourself!!! Just imagine putting your worries in a package and tucking them in the back of your closet for the next week or so. Many schools are not sending out anything more until the first week in April anyway. Worrying won't make it go by any faster. Trust me, I've tried it!

Please, please, please drink lots of water and rest.

K

Are any of you that are accepted going to Grand Night next weekend? Several of us parents will be there. Please write me an e-mail (not a PM) if we can look for you.

This will be a wonderful show, if last year is any indication, and they will be working hard on it once back from spring break. It's also an excellent time for accepted students to see for themselves why they want to be part of this great program.

Hey Everybody! I hope everyone has gotten lots of rest on there various spring breaks. We just got back from ours and we have quickly jumped right back into everything! There are some amazing things happening at Elon right now and here are a few of the highlights going on this week:

Tuesday, March 27th: Andrew Lippa, composer and lyricist of "The Wild Party" among many other amazing things, is giving a master class tonight at 7:30 in Yeager Recital Hall. We have 6 very talented Elon MTs who will be singing various selections of his music including "Maybe I Like It This Way," "Let Me Drown," and "My New Philosophy.

Friday and Saturday, March 30th and 31st: A Grand Night for Singing, a musical review which is directed, choreographed, and performed completely my Elon MTs, is taking place this weekend. Like Ericsmom was saying, this is a wonderful opportunity to see the Music Theatre Department as a whole strut there stuff. It includes a wide variety of numbers ranging from "I Got Rhythm" to "The Great American TV Show" from The Great American Trailer Park Musical. It's gonna be a fun time! Come if you can!

Endless oodles of Elon MT love ~

Oh, that's so cool that Andrew Lippa is there right now. I want to come for the Grand Night for Singing revue, but I don't think I'll be able to make it because of play rehearsals and other conflicts...

corsairstw & tayloooooorrrrr - Congrat's on Elon acceptance. I would encourage you to accept Elon!

Neither of you had e-mail activated for me to write you, and I don't prefer PMs.
