As the end of my daughter's first year of college is fast approaching, I can't imagine her being anywhere else! Lexie loves Elon and has had such a wonderful experience her first year. Living so far away, it's nice to know she has a "home away from home" Oh and she loves, loves, loves the faculty and feels she has improved so much in such a little time. Can't wait to see what the next three years have in store for her. Best wishes for those of you who will be adding the the wonderful mt family next year!

Lexismom - couldn't agree more about the faculty! New friends at Elon are pretty special, too!

Not much activity on this thread lately...

I wanted the CC family to know that many of the Elon students are happily working in summerstock theatre this summer. We're so proud of them!

I got to see my son's first summer show last weekend, was very pleased, and enjoyed the show. He is with students and graduates from many MT programs around the country, all of whom are nice and talented. Isn't it great what a small world this theatre world is? All of our kids could end up together again sooner or later as they get out there to work.

He is very happy with the training he is getting at Elon in all MT areas. I was especially impressed in this particular show with the dancing he did. He went into college with dance being his least experienced area. After dancing at Elon several hours a day all of this past school year, he has really become pretty advanced! I was excited about this!

It's going to be a great summer!

Ericsmom, an amazing first year altogether for your S! M is having a great summer so far too. She has had two offers so far in her field (Paying offers no less), one as a TA/RA in MT for a college prep arts program at Wesleyan University (she turned it down because she wants to audition, while temping in offices!) And a call back for a dancing gig held every weekend throughout the summer at the local casino that she auditioned for in NYC this past week. Room & travel & pay! She is hoping to work out a scheduling conflict as she has to leave this weekend to fly back to Elon to finish a film shoot that she started in May, and of course that's when rehearsals for the new job start! I will be getting her things out of storage down there and trying to set up her bedroom in her off campus apartment while she works in her "sorority sisters slasher movie" egads. Hopefully we'll be able to hit a few yard sales in the process to help make it cozy. Whew, my calendar was so nice and empty a few weeks ago...what the heck happened?!?

I see a lot on performing arts at Elon in this thread. What else does Elon excel in ?

how does Elon fare in ...

study abroad opportunities?

internships?

graduate school entry?

also, how prevalent is drinking and partying on campus? Is there a strong Greek component to campus life at Elon?

idic5...I'll let those with first hand experience at Elon answer your questions.

But to answer the Greek component, here is the data:

26% of the male undergrads are in frats
43% of the female undergrads are in sororities

There are 10 fraternities and 11 sororities.

Re: study abroad:

73% of 2007 Elon graduating seniors studied abroad for at least one term.
Elon has numerous approved study abroad opportunities.

idic5, are you aware that this thread is devoted exclusively to discussion of Elon in the musical theater and acting areas? This is not the general thread for discussion of Elon in general. Go to the CC home page and look at the alphabetical list of schools, and you may find a more general thread there. Good luck!

^^^ Ditto what NMR just posted......visit the forum for Elon on CC because this forum is JUST for those interested in Musical Theater, though you are welcome to participate! You will find information and helpful posters who are not interested in musical theater on the Elon Forum:

Elon is one of the highest rated schools for study abroad - I read this in some general college guide - not sure which one. They strongly encourage students to study abroad.

Performing arts is a wonderful dept., but it is small for the university as a whole. The largest 3 majors (not in any particular order) are business, education, and communications.

Apply to University first, THEN request audition time and date?

Can anyone tell me whether a student who plans to audition for MT at Elon needs to submit his or her application to the UNIVERSITY before requesting an audition time and date at Elon? I find the school's web site confusing on this issue. It says that students must apply at least two weeks before their requested audition date, but it doesn't say whether that "application" is the application that they have to call the Dept to request or if it is the general U application. If anyone can sort this out for me, I would appreciate it.

NMR - I believe this issue was addressed last year on the thread, and I don't necessarily trust my memory after 2 years. Probably good to check with the performing arts dept. to make sure on issues like this. Things can change from year to year.

If my memory serves me correctly, the 2 week requirement is for the paperwork from the performing arts dept. I believe the application to admissions is totally separate and is due by the regular due dates (sometime in Nov. for early action, and a later date for regular decision candidates).

I remember that the MT acceptance letter said it was pending academic acceptance to the university, which thankfully came a few days later (I believe EA candidates get academic acceptance online on 12/20). If one did not apply EA, you wouldn't know about academic admissions until spring (sometime in March). Remember, EA is non-binding, so it doesn't hurt to go ahead and do this.

Also, it seems that not many students the past couple of years have heard about acceptance to MT in Dec. Most are told about that acceptance to the program in March. In other words, students are "deferred" or wait listed in fall and learn about MT in spring. Not sure how this will be going into next year.

I just sent in my son's audition request form today. Kimberly Rippy(audition coordinator)-krippy@elon.edu-said that the application needed to be in two weeks before the actual audition date. We sent in the audition form(provided by the school on request) and will finish the application as my son polishes his essays.

Thanks, everyone. I will have my daughter go ahead and request an audition form and date and get that in, and then get to work on the applications. She has been at CMU's precollege program all summer and is now scrambling both to get her driver's license test out of the way, do her reading for AP English, and tackle college applications. The fun has begun, (she says, sarcastically!)
