| Reply to Jamimom We had around 175 students audition last year for 16 spaces in the Music Theatre Department. We did send out a few more acceptance letters to allow for those students who would not accept. |

| This is all great information about Elon. The school is on our list and we
will be visiting this summer. Does anyone know anything about the
engineering and/or math programs? Are they good quality? We would be
grateful for any info. I've read that the engineering program is a 3/2 and partners with some great schools (Columbia , WUSL). Is it automatic getting into those programs? |

| RE Elon Honors in M/T and other majors
Can anyone give input on whether the Performing Arts/ Music Theatre programs usually have Honors students, how many, how do they manage the demands of Honors and their Major requirements?
Regarding other programs - Elon was a school completely new to us until someone recommended them to our son. The next day he received a mailer from them. It took some thinking and juggling to arrange a car trip (15 hours round trip) for their Junior Open House in April, but it seemed meant to be. We weren't disappointed. Even on a rainy morning with teenagers, all staff and students we encountered were very gracious. The motels in the area apparently were also well prepared w/ exact directions to the school. Concerning other majors, I can't speak on many. I can tell you that the student speaker to the parents was a communications/journalism major I believe? He was one of the best I've heard of any speakers anywhere. He was confident, connected, and very poised. He certainly seemed ready to enter the "real" world. He also offered a fair amount of specific info on internships THROUGHOUT his years at Elon, a program which I believe is helping Elon gain some recognition. When we returned home, we did report our impressions to folks up here. During those conversations we learned that in the north Elon has a good reputation for its sports programs as well. It certainly has a lot to offer in theatre and beyond: well worth the look! |

| Elon Fellows
My previous post mistakenly refers to Elon Honors - what I meant was their Fellows program. I see from Kimberly's post that the theatre program does have Fellows students. Can anyone give insight to the demands of the Fellows program along w/ the music theatre program and how some current students manage this? Thanks. |

| Reply to abparent I am attaching the link which describes the different Fellows Programs. The three our students most often apply for are Elon College Fellows, Honors Fellows and Leadership Fellows. Please take a look at the information and if you have specific questions, let me know. http://www.elon.edu/admissions/fellows/ |

| My daughter got a grant from Elon, I think a couple of grand, she also tried for the fellows program but was turned down. Her SATs were in the 1300's, 3.5 cum plus excellent ecs. So I suspect you need 1400 plus to get these kind of awards. She loved Elon and we were very impressed - the best college we visited - but no financial aid. To their credit, they were quite up front about that. Elon's price tag has increased rapidly over the last 5 or 6 years. It was 15 grand or so, below NE flagship states, but now its in the 25 grand range. While we were visiting we ate at a Japanese restaurant and the guy at the sushi bar next to us was back for a trustee meeting. Rising cost of attendance was his main concern. Elon plans to develop their endowment to provide money for aid, but so far it just hasn't happened. Their goal at the time we visited was to get their SAT average over 1200. Without a sizable endowment that's going to be difficult. Kids from moderate income backgrounds with scores above 1200 are far more likely to choose their flagship state, like PSU, With state aid and a small grant it's under 15 grand and a lot closer. To really compete Elon needs to raise money specifically for student aid.
PS Elon came to national prominence in one of the early NSEE surveys. Elon along with Wabash, Sweet Briar and Beloit was named one of the colleges with the best student satisfaction. Elon has certainly ridden with that, I don't know how the others have done. BTW, the NSEE has stopped indentifying and comparing colleges in their public releases, but Elon got a great plug |

| I know kids who picked Elon over Penn State. Penn State is not so cheap either, and they do not give 100% of need. Speedo, did you have demonstrated need that was not met at Elon?
U of Richmond is a school that has recently really raised their prices because they feel they now can. It used to be quite a good deal, and they gave very generous merit awards. Those awards are still there but I think the threshholds to getting them are higher. |

| After the Elon scholarship and the various fed and state grants and loans, she was about 7 grand over our EFC. Not only that but it took several phone calls to get them to produce the fin aid package and they were not interested in reviewing it. She was looking at about 12 grand in loans for the first year and about 50 grand total. We felt that was too much for undergrad school. Elon has very few low income out of staters - probably in the 1 or 2 % range. And youre right about PSU, their package wasn't too good either, after the aid she was still about 5 grand short. But remember, Elon is now 25 plus, PSU is still around 18. Elon's cost has increased 50 % over the last 5 years and they're still giving only a couple of grand in scholarships - you're paying 23 grand to go to Elon, many instaters are paying 14 or 15 for PSU. |

| New SAT's Hello Kimberly.
Just a question regarding the new SAT's. I know you mentioned 1200 but I am assuming it was the the old SAT's. Has anything been mentioned regarding the new SAT scores?
Thank you for joining this forum. I'm sure you will be very helpful.

| Sorry, had another question - Does Elon include any classical study with their M.T. program (ie - OCU, Baldwin Wallace and Steinhardt).
Just wondering.
thanks |

| Classical study? Do you mean classical music? If so, yes. Music theatre majors study a lot of classical work. In fact our repitoire each semester has to be 2/3 classical and 1/3 music theatre. If by classical you mean acting, Shakespeare and the like... yes, we do that too. We have a bunch of special topics classes that teach Shakespeare, Chekov, Restoration plays, etc. |
