Does anyone know what the best residence halls for freshman are at Elon?

Your D might want to check out Elon class of 2013 on facebook. My S has met a lot of future classmates there and they share info on what dorms they like and such. I see your D is doing vocal performance at Elon. My S will not be pursuing vocals as a class but I'm sure he will be singing around campus, so they will likely be bumping into one another from time to time. Small world... Bet your D will love E.

My son is deciding between Elon and U Delaware. Being from NY we are a little concerned about going to a school in the south. What are the students like at Elon?

It depends on what you want, but the Colonnades are great rooms, but a little unsocial. If you want them I recommend trying to get into one of the learning communities, because they're the ones that have dibs on them. I lived in Colclough freshman year and loved it.

Elon runs shuttles to the airport, and 75% of the students at Elon are from the Northeast so I would think that any good student will feel at home ( home with better weather). Students are mostly outgoing and friendly - adding to the school community experience is big at Elon.
Elon is a unique LA based university with about 5,000 students total. UD has about 20,000. Very different places in many ways - Does your S know what kind of educational experience will fit him best?

Elon also has a very large percentage of students that come from north of the Mason-Dixon. I too am from New York City and was initially skeptical about going to the south. While 30% of students come from NC, most come from MA, NJ, MD, and CT.

We are also from the northeast and my daughter was also considering University of Delaware as well as other northeast schools. She decided on Elon because of its great education for the price as well as the beauty of the school. Several kids we know from our area have applied, but only 2 others that we know are actually attending. She has talked to several students on their freshman facebook and a good number are from the northeast as well. I truly think they will love it!

My daughter is a junior (RA in Colonades), and my son is a freshmen in the Service Learning Community. (part of first floor Staley). They both think that the Hall style dorm is best for freshmen. They are generally a more open and friendly environment than the suite style because people are closer together, and you get to know more people. The suite style dorms all (except colonades) have outside hall ways, so you are basically in a small dorm with 8 people in your immediate suite. The outside suite doors lock, so it is harder to casually meet people even living in the suite next door. The colonades is a beautiful dorm, but it is very isolating. The rooms are divided between suites (4 people) and stand-alone singles. The way the dorm is laid out it is very quiet, and you don't easily run into other people. It's great for an upper classmen ,but not good for meeting people and becoming engaged.

My son really likes the SLC (service learning community). It is all freshmen (coed), except for three sophomore leaders. They all live on one end of the first floor of Staley. They are encouraged to keep their doors open. You might want to consider it. There are a lot of advantages to being with group of all freshmen. It's not that upper classmen are unfriendly, but they often have formed groups of friends, and are not that available.

My son lived in Smith, a cinderblocked all-male dorm with hall bathrooms. Far down on his list, with the only redeeming factor being the great location on campus- central to everything. He ended up loving it and so happy he was in a hall dorm. They had a pack of about 30 who were great friends. The girls dorm next to it is Carolina and it was the same although my son said it smelled much better.

I think that, when looking at floor plans, many high school kids want a suite or a dorm style other than hall. But the hall arragement is a much more socially open, friendly place than other styles. It is perfect for freshmen...
