You can be admitted to Emerson, the college, but not the BFA program. This happened to my daughter at Emerson.
I can't list every school where this is true.
Just to correct one thing in Kat's post, it is NOT true at UMich if you apply for the BFA and don't get the BFA that you may be offered admission to the university. You can only get into the university there if you ALSO apply SEPARATELY for the arts and sciences.
Some colleges have a bifurcated process where you have to be admitted separately to the university and separately to the BFA program. Off the top of my head, this is true at Elon, OCU, Otterbein, Indiana, Marymount Manhattan.
Some schools, it is all one process and all or nothing.....examples are NYU/Tisch, Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon.
