I'm an incoming transfer student, and I've been assigned to Harris Hall. However, I've read on this site (and on the Emory housing site) that it is a freshman dorm. I've also read that it's being phased into a sophomore dorm. Which one is true? If it is a freshman dorm, I think that might be a little uncomfortable for me considering I'm already old enough to drink.

There will be plenty of drinking in Harris Hall regardless of the age, no need for discomfort (though I get the gist of what you're saying. You're older than them. If this is a concern, make sure to make friends with upperclassmen at Clairmont. You can hang out over there more. For you, Harris is convenient due to its closeness to quad and b-school classes and the library, however, you can choose to hang out elsewhere during social time). Also, you should be getting a single right (any sophomores in Harris get a single I think). Harris is in transition to become a sophomore dorm, so they, overtime, will cede more spaces to sophomores.

Thanks for responding. I'm not really concerned about the drinking so much as the age and maurity difference. Additionally, I should assume that since I requested a single I was placed there? I was more hoping that I would be placed with others who were in a similar situation to my own. I have an eighteen year old sister, and as much as I love her, I would prefer to not have that "big sister" experience at school as well. Do you think housing would consider my attempt to change dorms?

Yes, Harris has the singles. That's probably why.

Yeah, they probably would. However, if you are a sophomore, expect Clairmont tower, Woodruff, Clifton Tower, or Alabama.

I was in Harris my freshmen year and have to say it's mostly a crappy place. Dark hallways, kinda rundown, and generally tends to be the party hall among the freshmen and also the hall that's most likely to get busted by the cops. It might be difficult for a transfer student to fit in, so I'd try to go for Complex (right next door to Harris), Woodruff, or Clairmont Tower. Although with the latter two dorms sophomore students usually don't socialize with others on the same floor besides their suitemates. Not sure if they let transfer students pick their own rooms though instead of just asking for preferences...

If they like to party, they will fit in fine. However, if they were attempting to escape that scene, it will suck. I forgot to mention complex. Complex is a nice balance of sociability and calmness/academic orientation.
