Emory v. UGA

My college choice is between Emory and University of Georgia and I have no idea what to do. I'm fairly serious about school and want an intellectual challenege, and obviously Emory has top notch academic programs and a really bright student body. But, I'm also up for a good time and love college football, and in that department UGA is one of the best in the country, plus they've got solid academics and great study abroad program. Also, Georgia is significantly cheaper than Emory which won't make or break the choice but is fairly significant. Any insight into choosing between the two?

i actually had to make that decision too, emory and ga honors. i went with emory lol but what do u think u want to major in? that would make a big difference. i went with emory because i want to go into science and potentially premed, and emory clearly has a better reputation for that.

and as for the football, i just plan on driving up to uga for every home game lol and btw, emorys study abroad program is much better lol and im not even saying that because im biased, it was actually another reason i chose emory. if us study abroad for a semester, it actually saves u money since the room and board in foreign countries are generally cheaper than on the emory campus.

another factor - how much would u be paying personally? or would ur parents cover the whole thing?

I think I'll be either majoring in Middle Eastern Studies, where Emory has the advantage, or journalism, where UGA has the advantage. When I say Georgia's study abroad was better I didn't necessarily mean overall, but they have a program I'm interested in doing and they make it very affordable by waiving OOS tuition for the semester. My parents will be paying but cost is still a big factor, my family is not as well off as some of the wealthier students at Emory.

I am going to major in biology (pre-med), so Emory would obviously be my choice

yeah that's tough. if money's an issue and you're not sure what you want to study, i'd have to say uga. for me, money was an issue but it was my dream school and what i want to study is evidently better at emory so it was an easier decision..

If you're planning to just major in English, is it safe to say Emory is the better choice?

yes - our English department is simply amazing. We have Pulitzer Prize Winner Natasha Tretheway and famed writer Salmon Rushdie in addition to numerous other professors (all who will actually be teaching undergrads).

my parents are covering about 3/4 of the cost and I have been applying to about 5 scholarships a week. my portion is little over 10k per year and i decided that it was worth it for me personally to fork over that amount. so I will be taking out loans, applying to scholarships year round, and I am also aiming to get emory scholarships through the emory scholars program sophomore - senior year. emory offers a ton of scholarship money, merit based, if u deserve it, once u establish yourself at the school

i'm in the same boat as you CB... money is a major issue as my parents' independent restaurant business is not as well off as it was 5-8 years ago.. tough decision with little time left.
