I heard that Emory is thinking and will likely change the general requirements...to match something like what Johns Hopkins does...my first question is whether that is true...and my second question is if this were the case, how exactly would the new system run (if anyone knows lol).

I am not exactly sure..but this is what I heard during my visit:

There are 2 votings that take place to pass it...the first voting said yes....the second voting has not started yet...only if both voting will approve than it will change...

Second, if it does change, it will allow students to have a more relax curriculum....Emory will require less requirements....and more room for people to choose classes that they are interested in..

and plus apparently, only AP score of 5 will be accepted for credit the university's not sure whether to impose that on new incoming students or currently attending students also

Do you guys think it would be a good idea for Emory to decide what they are doing with AP test scores BEFORE May 1st? IMO, (and, no, my d is no longer involved with Emory), it would be ridiculous to impose this on incoming students AFTER they have already made their decisions......and what about the ED kids? Nothing like being blindsided....

and one more thing....the AP tests are the 2nd and 3rd week of May.....All of you should make sure you know the "new policy" before you kill yourselves...(and pay for all of those tests)

Yes, I think they should decide ASAP so that we should know what's going to happen with credits and have an idea. I already paid the deposit and everything, so I'm going to emory 99%, but if i actually knew about this GER requirements most likely changing, I would have thought about going there or not A LOT more.

As a current Emory student let me tell you that we are all in the dark as much as you if not more. The powers that be still haven't told us if the GERs are going to be back applied to us. Good luck.

Nogueira: I heard that the GERs are actually going to be less (from 72 hrs to 48 hrs) and in this new plan ppl would be able to use any course to count towards GER. This is according to an article in The Wheel dated 03/21/08. And yes, I totally agree with you, I really wish they would just tell us straight up what was going on

Yesterday, I sent an email to the Emory Undergraduate Admissions Office asking abou tthe new GER Requirements and the AP credits, and they replied like this:
"The new GER requirements and AP credit policies would not apply to this year's incoming students. We will still give credit for a score of a 4 or 5 on an AP exam. Students entering this fall will have the choice of completing the old GER requirements or the new ones."

I'm actually really excited about the possibility that the general education requirements might be changing, since I think students will get a lot more freedom when it comes to class choices. Does anybody know if the changes were officially approved yet?

wait..the article said that it is for 2009...does that mean that we are not influenced by it...

It says that some students will be given the option to follow the old GERs or the new ones, so I don't know if that means if you follow the old ones you could have 4s, or if they'll let 4s apply to the new requirements too.

I'm sure it's going to anger a lot of people if they don't let us use 4s at the last minute after we've all applied and committed (not that it'd change our minds about going, just an annoyance)
