Citizenship and Living Green FYE communities

These are the descriptions in the email that I received:

Citizenship FYE
Citizenship FYE explores and the nature of the idea of citizenship. From political, economic, and social citizenship students will explore citizenship the community will look at citizenship through a variety of lenses. This FYE community will offer unique programs such as field trips, special guest speakers, and special celebrations. Check out our website for more information.

Living Green
Environmental conservation. Sustainable communities. Social justice. Educate yourself, the community, and the world about living with an awareness of the impact we have on our surroundings and our ability to ensure a high quality of life for future generations. Be a part of Living Green at Emory during your first year and examine what strategies we can employ at Emory to support the "three E's -- Environment, Economy, and Equity."

I checked the website and I am still a bit confused about what is going on here. Could someone elaborate on what these are about and why I might want to do something like this.

They are programs you apply to where you live in certain dormitories. Nice, new dormitories. It doesn't seem to require anything much more than a narrower set of freshman seminars you can choose from, and it's a way to make sure you get a nice dorm and not the older ones. There are optional events through the programs too.

So I don't actually have to do anything and I get a newer dorm? Why wouldn't I do this?

You have to pick one of their seminars and do this one-on-one conversation thing, but yeah, it seems very much worth the application.

One-on-one conversations are required for all dorms. They're known as Coke Conversations.
