Was Emory NOT competitive to get into this year?

I don't want to start and argument or a fight, and I'm truly just asking for an honest answer. A ton of people from my school who you would consider average all got into Emory...and I mean average (1200's-1300's SATs, and ranked from 50 to 150 in our class). I also noted in this forum, that there was rarely a rejection in the Official Decisions Thread, and that a few who didn't seem qualified got in. Does it have anything to do with the drop in application rates? Are they just taking anyone who "seems" capable of handling Emory now?

I got waitlisted....I had a 1500/1600(C.R. and Math) and a 2200/2400 overall, and a 3.8 unweighted gpa with (10 A.P.s + 7 Honor Classes/28 Classes total.....)

also most people who got rejected or waitlisted are less likely to post on the official decisions thread than the peoople who got accepted...

You got waitlisted for a different reason though. They didn't think you might attend and decided to waitlist you.

I was waitlisted as well, with 1410/1600 and 2180/2400, 3.9 UW GPA, 5th in class, and 9 APs.

I have no reason to believe they waitlisted me based on the fact I might not attend.

Colleges00701 is right, I didn't feel like taking the time to post my decision in the thread, even though all I would have to do is copy + paste.

The accepted class is more competitive than last year. Applicant Pool Down, Diversity Holds Steady | The Emory Wheel

SAT average of 1394 and a GPA increase from 3.82 to 3.84

Not every stellar student who applied to Emory or any other top university, for that matter, is a participant in CC. In fact, I would speculate that there are more admitted students who do not, because they have real lives.

Maybe you didn't show enough interest?

I think admissions were weird this year at Emory. A lot of my friends were waitlisted and they are definitely qualified.

BigWeight: dying to know where you live and if alot these kids were URM's......I can be willing to bet you are not in the NY/NJ/PA area.....

NM: I see you are from GA....makes sense; Emory is definitely trying to increase their geographic diversity as well as demographis....

No thats not why I didn't get in, I don't know why I wasn't accepted because my friend got in with MUCH HIGHER stats and no INTEREST AT ALL...

he had a 3.95/4.0 unweighted gpa, with 10 A.P.s and a 1600/1600(reading and math) and a 2340/2400 overall....he showed no interest, he didn't visit, didn't send in an interest letter, he didn't order a dvd, he didn't EVEN go to an interview when Emory alumni came to our area, and they had invited him too, ...(i assumed that if you didn't go to an interview you were invited to, it would be a slap in the face to the university, what the hell).
^^^ he didn't apply to any specail programs at Emory, like Emory scholars...

I on the other hand had a 3.8 unweighted, 10 A.Ps, 1500/2200, I ordered a dvd, I EVEN sent in an interest letter, I interviewed with Emory alumni in our area......and I was WAITLISTED...

My friend and I do not go to the same school, but live in the same area....

I live in the South(I am not from the Northeast), I thought Emory wanted more kids from the South???

Anyway I am persuing the waitlist agressively, I took myself off Finanical Aid because I don't need it, I am emailing all the adcoms that visited my area, my regional reps, and the person incharge of my waitlist, I am sending in interest letters, updated gc rec, updated transcript....I WANT TO GO TO EMORY

colleges: I was referring to BigWeight.....GL with your waitlist attempt...btw, it is highly possible that you and your friend's application were read by different people at Emory, even though you live close-by......apps are given to reps randomly to read, not by geographic area....

I was just trying to show Bigweight, that I didn't get waitlisted because they thought I wouldn't attend, I don't think any top 20 university uses such practices...

I really don't know what the deal is. I don't think it's fair. But it seems like that if you have RIDICULOUSLY CRAZY stats, then they'll accept you despite lack of interest... not that your stats aren't great, aaron and colleges.

I'm really confused. Aaron, I had the exact same SAT scores as you 1410/2180, except I had slightly higher other things, but again, only slightly higher (like a 4.0 instead of a 3.9)

Did you guys write amazing essays?

I really want to get off the Vandy waitlist so I can give you guys my spot. Like, I love Emory too, but I love Vanderbilt even more.

I also got waitlisted at georgetown and jhu and emory. I had a 2210/2400, 4.0 unweighted, 6.3 weighted, and 9 ap courses. i didnt show any interest because i hadnt known that that was so important (i wish i had discovered cc earlier). However, I'm probably going to cornell if they give me good aid.
