music and art at emory? (i'm not a music/arts major...)

I'm becoming a senior this fall, and I'm considering Emory as one of my top choices.

Music and art programs are one of the few things that I really want to continue in college, and even though I might not major in these subjects, they might be the determining factor for my last couple college choice.

I want to continue playing the viola in college, and I want to know if Emory has pretty good student ensembles/orchestras, etc.

Is the competition tough when auditioning for those groups? and is it possible to get lessons?

And does Emory offer good courses for art? I'm interested in art..just in general, like painting, drawing, etc. I'm not going to major in the arts but I still want to be taught by awesome professors/peers.

Emory does a good music program and the orchestra is good. Not great, IMO, but good. Most of your questions can probably be answered by looking here: Welcome to Music at Emory and Emory Art History Department

We don't have a department dedicated to visual arts, but we do have one that's under the Art History department.

If you're really interested in art, you might want to check out Washington University in St. Louis, as it's a school similar to Emory but has a great art department.

If you play the viola and audition for Richard Prior sometime before March something, you can probably get a Dean's Music Scholarship

A major in visual arts (without art history) has been approved by the Provost to be implemented in 2010, I believe. It's a lesser-known but strong department. It doesn't have the allure of some of the other departments because it's a new program. However, they have an amazing facility near the baseball field, and friends who are into visual arts talk wonders of the faculty. I would suggest visiting and speaking with faculty in your area of interest. I'm sure they could give you info about the new major and the email addresses of current students who can speak about the program.
