What is IEEE

What I know is that it is some sort of organisation. So, I am going to be an engineering freshman and I was wondering if there would be any advantages if I joined IEEE. What is the organisation about? What kind of stuff do you have to do if you are a member ?

IEEE - The world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology

or

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nice thing about the 21st century is that we now have this really cool thing called the internet.

^haha.

It is really funny, and kind of telling, that many people who want to go into a research involved field do none of that on their own before coming to a place like this and asking a bunch of people they do not know.
