My budget is about $1,000.
Is Dell inspiron 1520 a good laptop?

Any recommendations?

C'mon be nice. There really isn't a type of laptop that's required for engineers. Most of the work will probably be done in labs anyway. Dell is fine for schoolwork if you don't plan on gaming. Use those coupons that are posted all over the internet. Check out the new Vostro line they just released. Hope this helps!

Just be aware that Dell is experiencing delays on the Inspiron 1520. I ordered one on 7/23, and it isn't scheduled to ship until 8/28. So if you want it for the beginning of the semester, keep that in mind. The reason is that certain color lids are backordered. To avoid this you could place the order over the phone and make sure you indicate that you want a color that won't delay your machine. The last I checked, black and white were good, while there were delays on all the colors!

STAY AWAY FROM INSPIRION! my cuz is a networking engineering and he deals with this stuff a lot. Inspiron is the worst of Dell laptops. Consider buying Latitude D830 or if your like me, buy yourself a lenovo thinkpad t61. I got one for 1100 from ebay. brand new. with an EXCELLENT warranty. If you really need a Dell, then go for the one i told you. Its a small business laptop good for networking and heavy duty uses. t61 is very powerful and will last your entire schooling.

IBM thinkpads are by far the best. people like UriA702 who say that after Lenovo acquired the IBM personal computer devision, that the quality went down are just dumb. if you check the Thinkpad forums website, if not all people agree they are of the same or better quality and I agree. The fact is Lenovo made all Thinkpads for around 3 years before the acquisition, so it is impossible for the product to be of less quality. Every engineer on the Thinkpad team is the same as before the acquisition and the tech support is all the same.

I have a X60, T40, and T61 and love them all. and as a PC techI can say Thinkpads have the least if ever problems I have ever seen,.

I have a Macbook, if I need XP, I can run a virtual machine. If youre going to be an EE, you don't need a high powered laptop. For one of my FPGA chips, there's even a linux driver.

check on ebay for some outdated yet high price model to get an idea of what is it mean to be a good laptop then find some swap meet in you local area and go search for it. that is how i got mine. but i am a little bit lucky coz i can get all kinds stuff from the swap meet around my area and in some of the swap meets they have the newer sony laptop that is even better than those sell in store. but i have to admit it is time consuming and energy consuming but if you want the good stuff yet getting it in a ridiculous and i mean ridiculous price that is how i do it. i using a CF-18 panasonic toughbook and that is the only thing i bring to school. the only thing.

p.S I am EE major.

I also agree that Latitudes are better built than Inspirons. I've had my D620 for a year now and other than bad battery life (dell is sending me a replacement battery) its been working very well. In retrospect many of my friends who have Inspirons are having trouble with their machines. Latitudes are built for companies and so they're stronger. Of course I'm biased
